Fest FAQs:
Nominations
  • Before signups, we will have a nomination period for people to pick fandoms and relationships that they would like included in the fest. Each person can nominate up to five fandoms, with up to five pairings within each. Please only nominate fandoms that you plan to offer or request.

  • All fandoms in all media are welcome. Canon or non-canon pairings are welcome. Original works are welcome.

  • For the purpose of this fest, femslash is defined as fic or art containing a relationship between two or more characters who identify in canon as either female or genderqueer. (We do not mean to imply that genderqueer = female, but would like to include as many pairings as we can, and leave gender definitions to the participants' discretion). That means you may not request gender-altered/Rule-63/spectrum-shifting works for canon male-identified characters. To be clear:
    • You may request works about cis female-identified characters.

    • You may request works about transgender women, such as Ms Hudson from Elementary.

    • You may also request works about canonically genderqueer and gender-questioning characters regardless of their assigned gender, such as Franky from Skins UK, Alister/Athena from Huge, and Xavin from Runaways.

    • You may request a canonically always female alternate universe version of a character who is male in the main universe, such as Natasha Stark from Marvel 3490

    • You may not request works about characters who are male-identified in canon.

    • You may not request works about male-identified characters who are temporarily transformed or body swapped into an assigned-female body, such as Guy Gardner in Guy Gardner: Warriorette (if you don't know, don't ask).

  • Poly: We do allow poly groupings, so long as all the characters involved are eligable (f/f/f = fine; f/f/m = not in this fest, though you may list it as an option in your optional details.)

  • Crossovers: Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • RPF: RPF characters must be 18 or over at the time of nomination, and must be public figures in their own right (no girlfriends/kids/parents of public figures permitted).

  • You must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account to participate in nominations and sign ups. If you do not have one already, you can leave a comment here or e-mail the mods for an invite code. (For more on AO3 and how to sign up, go here).

Sign Ups
You can edit/delete your signup until signups close.
This is an exchange fest, which means you must produce a fanwork for someone else. If you withdraw, it is harder for everyone involved. So please, think carefully if you have the time before signing up. If you discover after signing up that you can't finish in time, contact the moderators as soon as possible.

Requests
  • You will have an option to select whether you would like to receive art, fic or both. Obviously, "both" increases ease of matching, but you don't have to request a format you do not want.

  • Signups must include 4-6 fandoms from our list of nominated fandoms, and each fandom must have 1-6 pairings from the list of nominated pairings. We encourage people to request more than the minimum, as the more pairings you ask for, the easier matching will be.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

  • While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include squicks. Other things to consider are the inclusion of general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, or anything else you’d like the writer or artist to know. However, please remember that these are optional for the person assigned to you. If you've requested art, please remember that not all fic prompts translate well into art (more on that here). If you have a lot to say, consider linking to a letter in your own blog with the extra details.

  • In your signup, do not imply rank for pairings or otherwise specify a favourite pairing. There is no need to make the person you are assigned feel bad if you want something they are not comfortable writing or drawing.

Offers
  • You may offer to make art, write fic, or both.

  • You may offer between 4-10 fandoms, with 1-10 pairings per fandom. Obviously, the more pairings you offer, the easier matching will be. You can also choose to offer "any" pairing in a given fandom, but please check the tag set to ensure that you're comfortable writing or drawing any pairing listed.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

Pinch Hitting
  • In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. You can find the pinch hits here.

  • You do not have to have an AO3 account to pinchhit, as you may submit via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • If you do pinch hit, you'll have the option of adding your requests to a special prompts post, so that those who'd like to can reward you with the gift of femslash!

Your Assignment
  • Your fanwork must focus on a requested pairing, and must include a romantic and/or sexual relationship of some kind. This is not a friendship ficathon. That means there should be some kind of f/f romance, longing, kissing, love, and/or sex. You're welcome to offer or request work featuring asexual characters as long as it's in the spirit of this rule.

  • You are not obligated to produce something for ALL pairings on which you are matched. Pick whatever you are comfortable with. However, if you want to write or draw more than one thing for your recipient, feel free.

  • You don’t have to write or draw the fandom/pairing you were matched on if something else your recipient requested interests you.

  • Please do what you can to avoid any listed squicks. While it is not required, if possible, please consider using one of your recipient's prompts.

  • Betas are not required, but are strongly encouraged. Fic submissions with excessive spelling, punctuation and grammar errors and art submissions that look like drafts will be rejected. If your submission is rejected for this reason you can resubmit it after you've polished your work. We will have a beta sign up post.

  • Due to the nature of this fest, it is hard for extensions to be given. If you know you won't be able to submit by the due date, please default as soon as possible. If you default prior to the due date, you may participate next year with no problems. If you simply fail to submit your work by the due date, or submit an unfinished work, you will not be able to participate in the next fest.

  • If you withdraw and the person assigned to create something for you withdraws, you will not be assigned a pinch hitter.

  • If you have a problem with, any questions about, or cannot complete your assignment, please contact us immediately at femslashexmod@gmail.com.

Extras
  • Please finish your assignment before you start on treats.

  • You do not need an AO3 account to post treats; you may do so via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • Treats of polished art and fic over 1000 words may be posted at any time. Please wait until the mod gives the word before posting shorter fic and sketches.

  • This fest has mandatory anon period for fic. Author names will be revealed one week after the archive goes live. Please do not promote your fic before that time.

  • The anon period for art is optional. Because of concerns about crossposting without attribution, artists may sign their work and may link to it, but they are requested not to crosspost the full art until all the end of the anon period. (For more on this, read here.)

Be respectful. Please realize that everyone has different likes/interests/squicks.

Fest Rules:
  1. All fic have to be a minimum of 1,000 words, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift.. There is no maximum word count.

  2. Art must be polished, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift. There is no maximum size for art or page limit for comics. Art must be hand or digitally drawn. We are not accepting manips at this time.

  3. Submissions may be any rating.

  4. Submissions must be femslash, and must focus on a requested pairing.

  5. Please don't talk about the specifics of your assignment in public until the creators are revealed. We'd like it to be a surprise for everyone.

  6. Gfts can't be part of a previously posted series.

Please do not hesitate leave a comment here or contact us at femslashexmod@gmail.com, if you have any questions/comments/concerns.

Rules compiled from [livejournal.com profile] rarepairfest and [community profile] femslash12.

Four Weeks Left
Yes, there are four weeks left in the 2016 challenge. You've got some time until stories are due on October 22, 2016 at 5 PM (PDT), but keep one eye on that countdown (seen here, with a time zone converter here).

If you've got one to share, don't forget to post a Dear Creator letter if you haven't already done so, especially if your request form is light on details.

There's also plenty of time left to sign up for pinch hitting and beta detail.

Five Weeks Left (belated)
As of yesterday, in fact, so four weeks and six days to the due date. Assignments are due between now and 5pm (PDT) 22 October 2016. (Countdown ClockTime Zone Converter)

This is about the time that I start telling inquiring minds that if their recipient has not specified optional details or a letter, than the creator can draw/write whatever they want. But Lo! there is still time to write and post your letter!

There is also time to sign up for the beta list and join the pinch hit list.

And of course to write and draw your assignments and do some treats into the deal. Have fun <3

Treats!
I've opened a summary of all the requests, for your treating pleasure. Or just for your looky loo pleasure, which is equally valid.

Reminder: If you'd like art as your gift or as a treat, it's a great idea to mention that in your letter and leave art-friendly prompts.

To see the requests, go here. I've sorted them by fandom, but you can also sort them by requester or by date.

To leave a treat, follow these simple steps.
  1. Finish your main assignment. (Unless you're not signed up, and just want to do a treat, in which case skip to Step Two).

  2. Find a request you like, read the letter if there is one.

  3. Draw or write your treat.

  4. If you don't have an AO3 account, e-mail the mods at this point (femslashemod@gmail.com), and/or go here for details.

  5. If you do have an AO3 account, press the "Post to collection" button on the main page of the challenge. You can also try posting a work as normal and making sure Post to Collections/Challenges is set to "femslashex_2016" but that doesn't always work, and clicking the button on the main page does.

  6. Make sure to enter your treat recipient's name under "Gift this work to" (don't tick any of the "Does this fulfill a challenge assignment" options you may find; that would be bad).

  7. Fill in the rest of the boxes as normal.

  8. Enjoy the satisfaction of having treated someone.

  9. Chew nails until archive opens, and your recipient comments.

For now, please only post art treats that are polished, and written treats 1,000 words or longer, also polished. There'll be a chance to post shorter fic and sketches of any after I assign pinch hits on the 22nd/23rd of October (I'll let you know!).

The collection will remain open even after reveals, so you have from now until sign ups next year to post a treat.

We will also be doing a treats for pinch hitters post, but I'm waiting for a few more people/replies, as the current state of affairs rather defeats the point of the anon period. I'll do another post for that once it's on the go.

Post-Assignment Notes
So hopefully by now you all have your assignments. The archive is now open! Assignments are due between now and 5pm (PDT) 22 October 2016. (Countdown ClockTime Zone Converter)

Art and stories will be revealed 5pm (PDT) 28 October 2016 at the earliest, or whenever after that it occurs that everyone has a gift.

While you're plotting and drafting, take a moment to read over these notes. Just a few logistical things I want to cover.

What You're Expected to Produce
You should write or draw one (1) fanwork for one of the relationships that your recipient requested. If you want to make additional fanworks, that's good too, but one is the requirement. It doesn't have to be the relationship you were matched on, if something else they requested strikes your fancy. It does have to be femslash. How you define fem and slash allows some wiggle room, but your fanwork must have a romantic and/or sexual element. Female friendship makes the world go around, but this is not a friendship fest.

Dear Creator Letters
Hopefully you have already finished your letter. Hopefully you have already unlocked your letter. I'm giving everyone a couple of days, but after that people in search of prompts from their recipients may e-mail me, and then I in turn may e-mail you.

You are not required to write a letter, but if you didn't get a chance to put at least your likes and squicks into the optional details section, I'd encourage you to write one. Your author or artist would doubtless like to make the perfect gift for you, but that's difficult to do without any idea of what you want.

Speaking of artists, if you requested art, it's a nice idea to include a few words as to what you'd like in art, and some art-friendly prompts. "Sex pollen that causes amnesia!" does not lend itself to all artistic styles. For more on art-friendly prompts, check out our "How To" post. It's also a good idea to mention somewhere in your letter what format(s) you'd like, and if you'd like art, fic, or both for treats.

Please, in your letters, do not rank pairings or fandoms. That looks like: "Susan/Ravi is my favourite pairing ever, and I really want fic for them! If you can't write that, I guess Ravi/Ming would be okay." Or something of that kind. It's a good way to make whoever signed up for Ravi/Ming feel like shit. It's also against the rules. We all have preferences, but try to be considerate, eh?

If you're looking for a letter, or looking to post a letter, here's where you want to be.

Treats
The archive is open. I'm not making a second collection for treats, as I find less people read them when that happens, and everyone should read all the treats! Please post your treats to the main archive.

However, if you're drawing a quick sketch or writing a treat under 1000 words, please wait to post it until after sign ups are due (22 October). Any and all polished art and fic treats over 1k are wonderful at any time.

For your treat-writing pleasure, I'lll be making all requests visible soon. We will also be adding a page for pinch hitters to post treat requests. Watch this space.

Beta List, Defaulting, Pinch Hit List
The beta list is here. Consider adding your name to it. Also, use it to find a beta. Everyone should have included their AO3 names, so it'll be easy to make sure you're not asking your recipient to beta read their own fic.

No one has defaulted yet, but they will. Most fests have a 10-25% default rate, which is just the way it goes, death of muses and the revenge of real life happen. If you're going to default, please do it early to that your pinch hitter will have lots of time to create the gift your recip deserves. Unfortunately, if you default and then your author/artist also defaults, I will not find a pinch hitter for you, and you might not get a gift. If you don't default, but just fail to hand in a completed work, you will be asked not to participate next year.

If you're interested in pinch hitting (which is what we need to happen when someone defaults), please join the pinch hit group. You have to have a gmail account, and need to change your group settings to e-mail you whenever a post is made. If you don't have a gmail account, you can still check the group for updates and claim pinch hits; I'll try to post notice here when they go out.

09 September 2016 @ 08:30 pm
2016 Beta List
Where there are writers, there are usually beta readers, so this is the post where you volunteer to be a beta (or look for a beta from among those who have volunteered). If you're interested, please do a quick copy-paste of the codebox, then put it in your comment and answer the questions provided.

09 September 2016 @ 08:25 pm
Pinch Hit List
Well, now! It's been mentioned a couple of times already, but, if you'd like to be a pinch hitter for this challenge, beat feet to the official pinch hit list and join up. Also: We're thinking of doing a "treats for pinch hitters" post like we did last year, and I'll provide more details on that as pinch hits trickle into the queue.

08 September 2016 @ 08:34 am
Assignments Sent
It usually takes AO3 a few hours to get them to everyone, so if it hasn't showed up just yet, give it a bit and check your spam filter. You can also access them via your assignments tab on the left side of your AO3 profile, or by checking the address: http://archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR USERNAME/assignments.

If you don't have an assignment, check back here, and we'll try to sort you out.

07 September 2016 @ 10:00 pm
Pinch Hits
An initial batch of pinch hits generated by the matching. Please claim via replying to the relevant google group page, or e-mailing the mods. Make sure to include your AO3 user name.

Pinch Hit #1: Marvel 616, Killers Kill; Dead Men Die - Annie Leibovitz, Chéri (Colette), Empire (TV 2015), Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

Pinch Hit #3: Code Name Verity - Elizabeth Wein, Dragon Age - All Media Types, Twin Peaks, Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling

Pinch Hit #4: Taylor Swift (Musician), Girl Meets World, The Secret Circle (TV), Secret Circle - L. J. Smith

Mod is going to bed. Hopefully assignments will be out tomorrow some time.

07 September 2016 @ 05:04 pm
Sign Ups Are Closed
We'll to start the great matching engine tonight. That can spit out a few issues, but hopefully we'll have everyone paired up in the next few days. Check your e-mails as we may need to contact a few people about offers.

There will also be pinch hits for the few people who don't match on the request side of things, so now would be a good time to add your name to the pinch hit list. We'll also post them here, for folks without gmail accounts.

Now would also be a good time to finish your letter, make sure your post is unlocked, and link it to the Dear Creator Letter Post.

Sign-Ups – Time Is Almost Up!
Right-o! You've all got a little over an hour left before sign-ups close, but there is still time! If you're still sitting on the fence at the eleventh hour, it's not too late! *taps wrist watch* But time is ticking! If you haven't committed yet, now's the time!

06 September 2016 @ 08:35 pm
Sign-Ups – One-Day Warning
All right, everybody, you have slightly under twenty-four hours to sign up for this challenge if you have not already done so. That's right: Sign-ups will be closing tomorrow, meaning Wednesday, September 7, at 5 PM (PDT). So! If you haven't jumped into the pool, it's not closed just yet, so don't be afraid to go for it.

If you need a little help deciding what to choose for your sign-up, go have a look at the sign-up summary, as well as the tag set and the always-useful sell-your-fandom post.

Answers
Someone asked when we will have requests viewable to all
Answer: 17 September, one week after assignments go out.

Someone asked who is eligible to sign up this year.
Answer: If you're one of the dozen people failed to hand in your assignment last year, and did not contact the mods about it at the time, we're asking you to please sit this year out. Everyone else is good to go.

Almost everyone asked why I can't move the Uncategorised Fandoms into their proper categories.
Answer: It is not within my modly power; it's an AO3 thing. Also, please check the Uncategorised Fandom section when looking for fandoms. There's good stuff in there.

Absolutely no one asked, but...
Please to keep an eye on the sign up summary page, and consider offering a needy fandom (that's one with no offers, and often one with one request and one offer). Also check out the sell your fandom page if you're looking for more ideas.

28 August 2016 @ 09:07 am
Sign Ups Are Open!
I encourage you to revisit the rules before rolling up your sleeves and signing up.

To be brief, and to borrow (rather heavily) from the sign-ups post from last year:
  • You must have – and be logged into – an AO3 account to sign up. If you do not have one, e-mail the mods (details about that and how to use the sign up form here).

  • Please only sign up if you are 100% certain you will be able to complete your assignment by 22 October 2016.

REQUESTS
  • You may request four to six fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms. (Make sure to check all categories, including "Uncategorised Fandoms" and "No Media" to make sure you don't miss any cool fandoms.)

  • For each request, do not forget that you can request art, fic, or both.

  • Each fandom must you request must have one to six pairings from the list of nominated pairings.

  • Your match will be based on fandom, pairing, and format (i.e. fic or art).

  • The description section is optional, but it is a very good idea to include information like squicks (especially squicks), general likes, rating restrictions, and prompt ideas. Note, too, that there are things that can be done more easily in fic than in art (and vice versa), so keep that in mind (for more details on art prompts, go here). If you have a great deal to say, it might also be a good idea to link to a "Dear Creator" letter in your own space explaining everything.

OFFERS
  • You may offer four to ten fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • Each fandom you offer must have one to ten pairings from the list of nominated pairings, and, again, if you choose to offer any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Again, as for requests, you can offer art, fic, or both.

Good notes to remember from last year:
  • Don't forget to check the Uncategorised Tags and the No Media sections of the tag set for extra fandoms (including Star Trek and Crossovers).

  • Occasionally, after you select a fandom, pairings you want might not appear in the drop-down menu despite already being in the tag set. If that happens, please copy and paste the pairing you want from the tag set, but remember that you need to get it exactly the same as it is there.

  • You may edit your sign up as much as you like between now and the close of sign-ups.

  • Please read over your sign-ups one last time before they close. After all, what if you ticked the wrong box?

  • Sign-ups close at 5 PM (PDT) on 7 September 2016. (Countdown Clock)

And now, without further ado:

Go here to sign up.

Dear FemslashEx Creator Letters
Link them here!

Be sure to include your AO3 user name, and the fandoms you nominated along with the link.

Please remember not to rank your fandoms or pairings. If you're asking for art, please remember to leave some art-friendly prompts. Please respect that everyone has different likes and squicks, and may love relationship you can't stand.

If you post a placeholder/locked post, don't link to it here until it's filled in/unlocked and ready to read.

If you'd like to list "extras" (relationships that are nominated in the tag set, but that you can't fit on your requests), that's okay, but try to make sure you indicate that they're second preference, and give them less space than the requests that you're getting matched on.

27 August 2016 @ 09:26 am
Sell your fandom / relationship!
Sign-ups open tomorrow, which means now's the time to talk everyone into offering your very favourite in that last spot.

So use this post to make convincing arguments such as: Pretty pictures, reasons why you love the thing, links to canon (please keep it legal).

Comment on Dreamwidth, or to the FemslashEx tag on tumblr.

25 August 2016 @ 08:15 pm
Nominations Closed: Clean-Up Time!
And there you have it, folks. Nominations are concluded.

Thanks to your efforts, our tag set is complete, and it is mighty. ... Except it's not quite complete. This is the part where I ask you to have a look at the fandom lists and see if we've got duplicate pairings, duplicates across fandoms, pairings in the wrong fandom, misspellings, characters inappropriate to the challenge, etc. Granted, you've already been doing this as the nomination process has developed, but this time is to put the final coat of paint on that tag set, so let us know if you find anything goofy, have any questions, etc.

Barring any (excessive) weirdness, sign-ups should open in three days, on Sunday, August 28 at 5 PM (PDT). I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully all of you are, too.

24 August 2016 @ 06:20 pm
Nominations – One-Day Warning
Specifically, you have until 5 PM (PDT) tomorrow, August 25, 2016. (Long-time participants will remember that I've never been very good at hitting the exact twenty-four-hour mark.) We have ourselves a splendid batch of nominations, but there's still some time left to get some more in if you've still got an itch to scratch. That being said, if you encounter any issues while you wrap things up, or if you've got any questions, feel free to comment here. As in previous years, there will be an official nomination clean-up post when all's said and done, but the more things we catch as we go, the fewer we'll run into at the end. (You all have been doing a wonderful job finding the goof-ups, by the way, so thank you.)

20 August 2016 @ 05:10 pm
*we interurupt this regularly schedule femslash*
To mention that if you want to start writing right now, [community profile] rarepairfest is currently looking for some last minute pinch hitters. While there isn't a lot of femslash in there, there's certainly some fun fandoms and relationships.

Check them out here.

Otherwise nominations are going very well. Don't forget to check the "Uncategorised Fandom" section for nominations you may have missed. There are some popular fandoms in there, just under different names for sorting purposes.

17 August 2016 @ 11:42 am
Question
Good nominating, everyone!

Everything's going well from our end, we have about 1800 relationships accoss 350 fandoms right now.

I see that the new Suicide Squad movie and BvS have both been nominated separately. Do the DC movie people want a DCEU tag, or are you happy as is?

As always, we're trying to do clean up as we go, so please point out any errors, duplicates or wandering tags if you happen to see them.
