Femslash Exchange 2016: Dates, FAQ and Rules
Welcome to our fourth annual femslash exchange!

Nothing major has changed since last year, but please look over the rules again, even if you've signed up before.

All times are 5pm PDT

15-25 August: Nomination Period
28 August to 7 September: Signups open
10 September: Assignments will be sent out by this date
22 October: Fanworks due
28 October: Archive goes live (or as soon as everyone has a gift)
4 November: Creators revealed

Associated sites: LiveJournal Feed & Tumblr & AO3 Collection & Tag Set.

Fest FAQs:
  • Before signups, we will have a nomination period for people to pick fandoms and relationships that they would like included in the fest. Each person can nominate up to five fandoms, with up to five pairings within each. Please only nominate fandoms that you plan to offer or request.

  • All fandoms in all media are welcome. Canon or non-canon pairings are welcome. Original works are welcome.

  • For the purpose of this fest, femslash is defined as fic or art containing a relationship between two or more characters who identify in canon as either female or genderqueer. (We do not mean to imply that genderqueer = female, but would like to include as many pairings as we can, and leave gender definitions to the participants' discretion). That means you may not request gender-altered/Rule-63/spectrum-shifting works for canon male-identified characters. To be clear:
    • You may request works about cis female-identified characters.

    • You may request works about transgender women, such as Ms Hudson from Elementary.

    • You may also request works about canonically genderqueer and gender-questioning characters regardless of their assigned gender, such as Franky from Skins UK, Alister/Athena from Huge, and Xavin from Runaways.

    • You may request a canonically always female alternate universe version of a character who is male in the main universe, such as Natasha Stark from Marvel 3490

    • You may not request works about characters who are male-identified in canon.

    • You may not request works about male-identified characters who are temporarily transformed or body swapped into an assigned-female body, such as Guy Gardner in Guy Gardner: Warriorette (if you don't know, don't ask).

  • Poly: We do allow poly groupings, so long as all the characters involved are eligable (f/f/f = fine; f/f/m = not in this fest, though you may list it as an option in your optional details.)

  • Crossovers: Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • RPF: RPF characters must be 18 or over at the time of nomination, and must be public figures in their own right (no girlfriends/kids/parents of public figures permitted).

  • You must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account to participate in nominations and sign ups. If you do not have one already, you can leave a comment here or e-mail the mods for an invite code. (For more on AO3 and how to sign up, go here).

Sign Ups
You can edit/delete your signup until signups close.
This is an exchange fest, which means you must produce a fanwork for someone else. If you withdraw, it is harder for everyone involved. So please, think carefully if you have the time before signing up. If you discover after signing up that you can't finish in time, contact the moderators as soon as possible.

  • You will have an option to select whether you would like to receive art, fic or both. Obviously, "both" increases ease of matching, but you don't have to request a format you do not want.

  • Signups must include 4-6 fandoms from our list of nominated fandoms, and each fandom must have 1-6 pairings from the list of nominated pairings. We encourage people to request more than the minimum, as the more pairings you ask for, the easier matching will be.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

  • While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include squicks. Other things to consider are the inclusion of general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, or anything else you’d like the writer or artist to know. However, please remember that these are optional for the person assigned to you. If you've requested art, please remember that not all fic prompts translate well into art (more on that here). If you have a lot to say, consider linking to a letter in your own blog with the extra details.

  • In your signup, do not imply rank for pairings or otherwise specify a favourite pairing. There is no need to make the person you are assigned feel bad if you want something they are not comfortable writing or drawing.

  • You may offer to make art, write fic, or both.

  • You may offer between 4-10 fandoms, with 1-10 pairings per fandom. Obviously, the more pairings you offer, the easier matching will be. You can also choose to offer "any" pairing in a given fandom, but please check the tag set to ensure that you're comfortable writing or drawing any pairing listed.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

Pinch Hitting
  • In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. You can find the pinch hits here.

  • You do not have to have an AO3 account to pinchhit, as you may submit via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • If you do pinch hit, you'll have the option of adding your requests to a special prompts post, so that those who'd like to can reward you with the gift of femslash!

Your Assignment
  • Your fanwork must focus on a requested pairing, and must include a romantic and/or sexual relationship of some kind. This is not a friendship ficathon. That means there should be some kind of f/f romance, longing, kissing, love, and/or sex. You're welcome to offer or request work featuring asexual characters as long as it's in the spirit of this rule.

  • You are not obligated to produce something for ALL pairings on which you are matched. Pick whatever you are comfortable with. However, if you want to write or draw more than one thing for your recipient, feel free.

  • You don’t have to write or draw the fandom/pairing you were matched on if something else your recipient requested interests you.

  • Please do what you can to avoid any listed squicks. While it is not required, if possible, please consider using one of your recipient's prompts.

  • Betas are not required, but are strongly encouraged. Fic submissions with excessive spelling, punctuation and grammar errors and art submissions that look like drafts will be rejected. If your submission is rejected for this reason you can resubmit it after you've polished your work. We will have a beta sign up post.

  • Due to the nature of this fest, it is hard for extensions to be given. If you know you won't be able to submit by the due date, please default as soon as possible. If you default prior to the due date, you may participate next year with no problems. If you simply fail to submit your work by the due date, or submit an unfinished work, you will not be able to participate in the next fest.

  • If you withdraw and the person assigned to create something for you withdraws, you will not be assigned a pinch hitter.

  • If you have a problem with, any questions about, or cannot complete your assignment, please contact us immediately at femslashexmod@gmail.com.

  • Please finish your assignment before you start on treats.

  • You do not need an AO3 account to post treats; you may do so via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • Treats of polished art and fic over 1000 words may be posted at any time. Please wait until the mod gives the word before posting shorter fic and sketches.

  • This fest has mandatory anon period for fic. Author names will be revealed one week after the archive goes live. Please do not promote your fic before that time.

  • The anon period for art is optional. Because of concerns about crossposting without attribution, artists may sign their work and may link to it, but they are requested not to crosspost the full art until all the end of the anon period. (For more on this, read here.)

Be respectful. Please realize that everyone has different likes/interests/squicks.

Fest Rules:
  1. All fic have to be a minimum of 1,000 words, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift.. There is no maximum word count.

  2. Art must be polished, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift. There is no maximum size for art or page limit for comics. Art must be hand or digitally drawn. We are not accepting manips at this time.

  3. Submissions may be any rating.

  4. Submissions must be femslash, and must focus on a requested pairing.

  5. Please don't talk about the specifics of your assignment in public until the creators are revealed. We'd like it to be a surprise for everyone.

  6. Gfts can't be part of a previously posted series.

Please do not hesitate leave a comment here or contact us at femslashexmod@gmail.com, if you have any questions/comments/concerns.

Sign Ups Are Open!
I encourage you to revisit the rules before rolling up your sleeves and signing up.

To be brief, and to borrow (rather heavily) from the sign-ups post from last year:
  • You must have – and be logged into – an AO3 account to sign up. If you do not have one, e-mail the mods (details about that and how to use the sign up form here).

  • Please only sign up if you are 100% certain you will be able to complete your assignment by 22 October 2016.

  • You may request four to six fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms. (Make sure to check all categories, including "Uncategorised Fandoms" and "No Media" to make sure you don't miss any cool fandoms.)

  • For each request, do not forget that you can request art, fic, or both.

  • Each fandom must you request must have one to six pairings from the list of nominated pairings.

  • Your match will be based on fandom, pairing, and format (i.e. fic or art).

  • The description section is optional, but it is a very good idea to include information like squicks (especially squicks), general likes, rating restrictions, and prompt ideas. Note, too, that there are things that can be done more easily in fic than in art (and vice versa), so keep that in mind (for more details on art prompts, go here). If you have a great deal to say, it might also be a good idea to link to a "Dear Creator" letter in your own space explaining everything.

  • You may offer four to ten fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • Each fandom you offer must have one to ten pairings from the list of nominated pairings, and, again, if you choose to offer any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Again, as for requests, you can offer art, fic, or both.

Good notes to remember from last year:
  • Don't forget to check the Uncategorised Tags and the No Media sections of the tag set for extra fandoms (including Star Trek and Crossovers).

  • Occasionally, after you select a fandom, pairings you want might not appear in the drop-down menu despite already being in the tag set. If that happens, please copy and paste the pairing you want from the tag set, but remember that you need to get it exactly the same as it is there.

  • You may edit your sign up as much as you like between now and the close of sign-ups.

  • Please read over your sign-ups one last time before they close. After all, what if you ticked the wrong box?

  • Sign-ups close at 5 PM (PDT) on 7 September 2016. (Countdown Clock)

And now, without further ado:

Go here to sign up.

Dear FemslashEx Creator Letters
Link them here!

Be sure to include your AO3 user name, and the fandoms you nominated along with the link.

Please remember not to rank your fandoms or pairings. If you're asking for art, please remember to leave some art-friendly prompts. Please respect that everyone has different likes and squicks, and may love relationship you can't stand.

If you post a placeholder/locked post, don't link to it here until it's filled in/unlocked and ready to read.

If you'd like to list "extras" (relationships that are nominated in the tag set, but that you can't fit on your requests), that's okay, but try to make sure you indicate that they're second preference, and give them less space than the requests that you're getting matched on.
27 August 2016 @ 09:26 am
Sell your fandom / relationship!
Sign-ups open tomorrow, which means now's the time to talk everyone into offering your very favourite in that last spot.

So use this post to make convincing arguments such as: Pretty pictures, reasons why you love the thing, links to canon (please keep it legal).

Comment on Dreamwidth, or to the FemslashEx tag on tumblr.
25 August 2016 @ 08:15 pm
Nominations Closed: Clean-Up Time!
And there you have it, folks. Nominations are concluded.

Thanks to your efforts, our tag set is complete, and it is mighty. ... Except it's not quite complete. This is the part where I ask you to have a look at the fandom lists and see if we've got duplicate pairings, duplicates across fandoms, pairings in the wrong fandom, misspellings, characters inappropriate to the challenge, etc. Granted, you've already been doing this as the nomination process has developed, but this time is to put the final coat of paint on that tag set, so let us know if you find anything goofy, have any questions, etc.

Barring any (excessive) weirdness, sign-ups should open in three days, on Sunday, August 28 at 5 PM (PDT). I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully all of you are, too.
24 August 2016 @ 06:20 pm
Nominations – One-Day Warning
Specifically, you have until 5 PM (PDT) tomorrow, August 25, 2016. (Long-time participants will remember that I've never been very good at hitting the exact twenty-four-hour mark.) We have ourselves a splendid batch of nominations, but there's still some time left to get some more in if you've still got an itch to scratch. That being said, if you encounter any issues while you wrap things up, or if you've got any questions, feel free to comment here. As in previous years, there will be an official nomination clean-up post when all's said and done, but the more things we catch as we go, the fewer we'll run into at the end. (You all have been doing a wonderful job finding the goof-ups, by the way, so thank you.)
20 August 2016 @ 05:10 pm
*we interurupt this regularly schedule femslash*
To mention that if you want to start writing right now, [community profile] rarepairfest is currently looking for some last minute pinch hitters. While there isn't a lot of femslash in there, there's certainly some fun fandoms and relationships.

Check them out here.

Otherwise nominations are going very well. Don't forget to check the "Uncategorised Fandom" section for nominations you may have missed. There are some popular fandoms in there, just under different names for sorting purposes.
17 August 2016 @ 11:42 am
Good nominating, everyone!

Everything's going well from our end, we have about 1800 relationships accoss 350 fandoms right now.

I see that the new Suicide Squad movie and BvS have both been nominated separately. Do the DC movie people want a DCEU tag, or are you happy as is?

As always, we're trying to do clean up as we go, so please point out any errors, duplicates or wandering tags if you happen to see them.
16 August 2016 @ 10:22 am
Nomination Updates
Please remember to check if your pairing has already been nominated before you yourself nominate it. It might have a slightly different name to make it fit in with the tags. We've been getting a lot of doubles lately.

Could whoever nominated "Hellblazer and Related fandoms" specific which related fandom? That tag encompasses at least three completely different versions. Also, would it not go in with DCU (Comics)?

Can someone tell me which pairings should go under Love Live! Sunshine! and which under School Idol Project? They keep getting their wires crossed.

Pokemon will hence forth be divided into Main Games, GO, Anime (and various Manga if someone nominates them). (Mod apologises for her confusion.)

Do people just want to have one massive all-encompassing Sailor Moon category? I had assumed different versions separate, but people keep nominating it under the master tag.
15 August 2016 @ 04:03 pm
More Corrections
Please type out the full names of the crossover fandoms in the crossover section, as not everyone knows the abriviations.

My profound apologies to Tolkien fandoms, as all the nominations managed to go through without my corrections to make them stay put. Could someone be a champ and write me a list of which pairings go with which book? My temptation to make "LotR & Related Works" a thing is pretty high right now. (ETA: I have a volunteer!)

Any Hetalia fans? There's only one version of each country/character, right? There's not a version of canon with alternate genders?

Could whoever nominated Sailor Moon clarify which version?
15 August 2016 @ 10:54 am
Update after some quick conversations.

X-Men movies are now divided into Original and Alternate timelines, with the Wolverine movies included in the original timeline. Deadpool is its own thing.

Star Wars will all be together under All Media Types.

Pokemon universes are to be nominated separately.

Again, Sailor Moon is separated by versions, so could whoever nominated it to the master tag please indicate which version they want.

There are a variety of sports fandoms with one pairing each, that to my eye could be combined into Olympic Games RPF, opinions?
15 August 2016 @ 05:46 am
Nominations Are Open!
Please read the rules before you start nominating.

In short:
  • You may nominate up to five fandoms with up to five relationships in each.

  • Both parties must be women or gender questioning/queer people you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge

  • All characters in nominated threesomes/moresomes must be women or gender questioning/queer people you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge.

  • Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • [Canonical Character]/Original Female Character is allowed. [Canonical Character]/Any is not allowed

  • [Canonical Character]/[Unnamed Character] is allowed in cases where there most likely was a woman, but we don't know exactly who she was, for example: Galadriel/Legolas' Mother in The Hobbit fandom.

  • There will be one category for Original Work, in which you may nominate things such as Princess/Handmaiden, Mermaid/Ship Captain, or Starship Captain/Chief Engineer.

  • You may wish to check out the nomination discussion post to see what fandoms and pairings others are nominating, and how to nominate large/complicated fandoms, but as a summary:

    • Songs with female singers and female or ambiguous pronouns are eligible.

    • All of the MCU movies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Agent Carter will be listed under Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    • Jessica Jones and Daredevil will be listed together under Marvel Netflix.

    • X-Men (Movies) will now be divided into X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies), X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) and Deadpool (2016). Wolverine movies go in Original Timeline.

    • Marvel Comics will be nominated by universe, for example: Marvel 616, Marvel Adventures, etc.

    • Main-continuity DC comics, including pre-Flashpoint and New 52, will be under DCU (Comics). Other DC universes such as Bombshells will be separate by universe.

    • Everything set in the Doctor Who universe can be nominated under Doctor Who (including Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood).

    • Tolkien fandoms will be split into The Silmarillion – J.R.R. Tolkein; The Hobbit (All Media Types), and The Lord of the Rings (All Media Types).

    • All of the old-continuity Star Treks together under "Star Trek: Classic Timeline (All Series)," AOS under "Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)‎."

    • Stargate will be grouped together under "Stargate - All Series"

    • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: The Series and assorted spinoffs will go together under "Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms."

    • All variations of Sailor Moon will be nominated separately.

    • All Pretty Cure series will be nominated together.

    • All Rune Factory series will be nominated together.

    • FF X and FF X-2 will be nominated as "Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2"

    • All of Dragon Age goes together under "Dragon Age - All Media Types"

    • Kamen Rider variations go together under Kamen Rider - All Media Types

    • Various Sentai properties go together under Super Sentai Series

    • The Les Mis tag will be "Les Miserables (All Media Types)."

    • Law and Order series will be nominated separately by series name.

    • Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow tv shows will be nominated together as "Arrowverse (CW TV)"

If you're unhappy with any of those combinations/divisions, the mods are willing to negotiate, but the sooner you mention it (either here or in the nomination discussions), the more likely we are to be able to change it.

If you spot any doubles, misfiled fandoms, random pairing popping up under other fandoms or pairings that don't qualify, comment here. We're going to do our best to wrangle as we go.

Don't waste a nomination! Before you nominate anything, check the tag set to see if your pairings and fandoms are already there.

Okay, ready to go? More than ready to go?

Click here to nominate some femslash.

Nominations will remain open until 5pm PDT, 25 August 2015.

2016 – Let's Discuss Nominations
Hello again, everyone!

Now that we're officially back in business for the year, it's time to talk about nominations. As noted in the previous post, those will be open in five days, at 5 PM (PDT) on Monday, August 15, so there's time to start batting things around before then.

Feel free to talk about what you're thinking of nominating in the comments, discuss eligibility, negotiate free spaces in your nominations with other users, etc.

You're also more than welcome to pull from our collection of user-made banners from prior years, but don't let that stop you from making and posting (via comment here) your own if you feel inspired.

2016 Round
Is happening, similar timing, but will be a week later this year.

We'll do a discussion post first week of August or so, and nominations starting 15 August.
03 November 2015 @ 04:42 pm
2015 Wrap Up Post
I think it mostly went pretty well this year, hiccup at the end aside. Bullet points for potential issues:

1. We might institute a pinch hits are due X hours before the archive opens policy, and that number might be six hours. That's built in buffer time for last minute vanishing acts etc.

2. There seemed to be a lot of confusion about what time things were due. I thought that was widely posted, but I'll put it on the comm info as well next year. Any other suggestions for making the time more clear?

3. Otherwise, timing working for people? Longer? Shorter? Different day of the week?

4. Art: So again we got some lovely art, and some really hot porny art, and there was much rejoicing. We did not, again, get very many people signing up for art. I'm not sure how to change this, or if it is changeable. All suggestions very much welcome.

5. Other formats: In that we're still struggling to get art happening, I don't see including anything else at this time.

6. I don't think anyone used the treats for pinch hitters post, and I'm wondering if it's worth the bother next year. It's a fun idea, but I'd save myself the work if no one actually does anything with it.

7. On a similar note, no one used posting via the mod account as an option. However, it doesn't take any work to offer it, so we may keep that.

8. Any other changes that would make things easier? More fun? More welcoming? Less confusing? Did anyone use that "How To" post I did? Was it useful?

Anon commenting on, and all input welcome.
30 October 2015 @ 11:17 pm
Creators Have Been Revealed!
Go forth and crosspost!

If you haven't left a comment on your gift yet, please do that!

Wrap up post to follow.
23 October 2015 @ 11:27 pm
2015 Archive Is Live
The Archive Is Open!

We had a great run this year, totalling 217 stories and pieces of art. The collection will remain open, in case anyone had a treat they didn't quite manage to finish. These are especially welcome in the week leading up to creator reveals.

Speaking of, please remember that we have an anon period this year. Authors, please don't reveal your identity until after creator reveals next week. Artists, you may tag your work to prevent art theft, etc, but please don't post it elsewhere until after reveals.

AO3 notifications should be going out shortly, if they haven't already. If you haven't got a notification in your e-mail, try checking the gifts section of your profile. You can also use the search bar at the top of the works page.

If you didn't get a gift, or received an incomplete/placeholder gift/gift that doesn't include one of your requested pairings/relationships, please contact the mods ASAP. Our e-mail is: femslashexmod@gmail.com

If you did get a gift, please check it out and comment on it! I know all the artists and authors can't wait to see how you liked their work. If you don't have time to read a longer story or comment properly, consider dropping a quick note to say that you've seen it's there and that you'll be around a bit later. I know everyone appreciates that.

Thank you so much to everyone who drew, wrote, beta read, cheered along, commented, advertised, reblogged, and generally made this thing go. A special thanks to all the pinch hitters, last minute and otherwise. We'll post a discussion post after creator reveals, to see how it went for everyone, and talk about how to make next year even better.

For now, go forth and enjoy the giant pile of femslash!
23 October 2015 @ 06:59 pm
Emergency Pinch Hits
One of our pinch hitters has been unable to finish. Please check out these two links and see if there's anything you can contribute. Archive will open when it opens.

Emergency Pinch Hit #1 (of 2) (Claimed! But treats!)
Fandoms: Person of Interest, Bad Blood - Taylor Swift (Music Video), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elementary

Emergency Pinch Hit #2 (of 2) (Claimed! But treats!)
Marvel Cinematic Universe, A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Current Mood: well fuck
23 October 2015 @ 01:33 pm
We may be an hour or two late, as a few of our hardworking pinch hitters need time to polish. The archive will still open tonight.
