Our 2023 rules and FAQ remain largely the same except for a simplification to our defaulting policy. Please take a moment to review the rules, even if you have participated in Femslash Ex before.

If you're only offering the minimum, or you're offering rare fandoms or relationships, don't forget you can view all requests here when planning your offers. You can also double check the 2023 Rules and the 2023 Tagset, if you need to.

Once your letter is complete, don't forget to link it in the Dear Creator post!

Quick reminders that binding request details (including Do Not Wants, vid accessibility requirements, or canon gender identities/pronouns), will only be enforced by the mods if they are listed in your sign-up! Fandoms can be duplicated in your sign-up, but don't forget to check you still have the minimum of three unique fandoms from the tagset in both your requests and your offers. Anyone without three or more unique fandoms will be asked to add to their sign-up.

Sign ups are open, which means it's time for Dear Creator letters!

Make sure to include your AO3 username, fandoms and pairings as well as the letter link.

Please wait until after you have completed/unlocked your letter post before commenting here.

You can include additional pairings in your letter if you have more than ten pairings you like in a fandom. You can also request f/f/m poly ships in your prompts as long as they aren't the only prompts for the f/f pairing. Please take care to make sure any such prompts are clearly optional and include more information about the pairings that are actually in your sign up so your creator doesn't feel bad about being unable to write a pairing if they matched with you on something else.

Please also be respectful of other participants if they have different preferences to you!

Sign-ups are now open a little early at the 2023 AO3 Collection.

Go over the rules one more time before starting your sign up, and remember to check the 2023 Tagset when choosing your fandoms and relationships. A quick reminder of the important points:

Creator’s Choice of Fandom:
We’ve allowed this in the tagset this year for the first time. If you request Creator's Choice of Fandom, your creator can choose any fandom you don't include in your DNWs to create for you, with two exceptions: - Original Works and RPF fandoms. If you would like to receive Original Works and/or RPF fandoms for your Creator's Choice of Fandom requests, please clearly opt into those categories in the request details section of your sign-up.

Requests

• You may request 3-10 fandoms from the tagset.


• For each request, you may choose 1-3 mediums (Fanart, Fanfic, and/or Fanvid)


• For each fandom, you may request 1-10 relationships from the tagset. If you choose to request any relationship, double-check the tagset and make certain that you're willing to receive any relationship listed in that fandom.


• You will match on at least one fandom, relationship, and medium.


• Remember that providing additional information can help your creator give you a gift you'll love, but that most details in the description section or letters will be considered optional. Please refer to the rules for more information if you're unsure about what may or may not be an optional detail!

Offers

• You may offer 3-10 fandoms from the tagset.


• For each offer, you may choose 1-3 mediums (Fanart, Fanfic, and/or Fanvid)


• For each fandom, you may offer 1-10 pairings from the tagset. If you choose to offer any relationship, double-check the tagset and make certain that you're willing to create for any relationship listed in that fandom.


• You will match on at least one fandom, relationship, and medium.

Don't forget...

• Check the Uncategorised and the No Media sections of the tag set for extra fandoms, crossovers, and original work tags.


• Occasionally relationships you want might not appear in the drop-down menu despite already being in the tagset for that fandom. If that happens, please copy and paste the relationship you want from the tagset, taking care to ensure that you've copied it exactly.


• You may edit your sign up as much as you like between now and the close of sign-ups.


• Please read over your sign-up one last time before they close. After all, what if you ticked the wrong box?


• If you write a Dear Creator letter, you can share them at our letters post!


• Your assignment will need to be completed and posted by 11:59PM EDT on 2 December. Please consider carefully whether you will be able to commit to that deadline before signing up.

Outstanding issues
DC's Arrowverse and Crossovers
Astra/Alex Danvers and Tamsin (Lost Girl)/Astra (Arrowverse): did the nominator(s) intend the character of General Astra or Astra Logue?

Ace Attorney
We currently have 大逆転裁判 | Dai Gyakuten Saiban | The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles approved which appears to be part of 逆転裁判 | Gyakuten Saiban | Ace Attorney. We currently intend to combine these under the second tag, but would appreciate confirmation that it's a shared universe or information on how to re-distribute the ships in the second fandom if combining isn't appropriate.

Legend of Zelda
We have pending nominations under Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom and also under a combined fandom tag. Previously we have kept Zelda games separate. Could the nominator of the combined tag please drop us a comment to discuss how to handle their ships or could we please hear from other Zelda fans about which game(s) Impa, Midna and Urbosa might best belong to.

Just a little over a day until we will be closing nominations. Check the countdown to be sure when that is in your time zone.

So far we haven't encountered any notable issues but if you have questions, your tags have been approved or rejected in a way that doesn't make sense, or you spot anything odd in the tagset then as always please let us know.

In short:
You may nominate up to ten fandoms with up to ten relationships in each.

All nominated characters must be female or genderqueer characters you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge

Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager). Crossovers submitted under a single fandom or submitted without fandom details after each name won't be approved until they've been corrected.

[Canonical Character]/Original Female Character is allowed. [Canonical Character]/Any is not allowed. The Character(s) version of OFC tags will no longer be used and any canonical nominations using this format will be approved without the plural. If nominating poly ships with original characters, please indicate the specific number of characters you would like included, eg. [Canonical Character]/Original Female Character/Original Female Character.

[Canonical Character]/[Unnamed Character] is allowed in cases where they were most likely a female or genderqueer character, but we don't know exactly who they were, for example: Galadriel/Legolas' Mother in The Hobbit fandom.

There will be one category for Original Work, in which you may nominate things such as Princess/Handmaiden, Mermaid/Ship Captain, or Starship Captain/Chief Engineer.

You may wish to drop down into the comments below to see what fandoms and pairings others are nominating, and how to nominate large/complicated fandoms. We will be continuing to wrangle most shared universe fandoms in the same manner as previous years, please check the list below before nominating.

Fandoms should be nominated according to shared universes. This means fandoms with common settings and characters or unique shared backstories and timelines, should be grouped together. Different versions of characters/timelines or unique adaptions should be nominated separately. Please note that All Media Type fandom tags may or may not be eligible, depending on whether AMT encompasses multiple versions of a character or multiple timelines.

RPF, Band, and other ‘real world’ characters should be grouped under the broadest fandom title that makes sense, trying to minimise the number of fandoms an individual character could belong to while also avoiding the fandom becoming unwieldy.

Many franchises are already in the shared universe list. Please check it thoroughly and nominate accordingly. If you are nominating a related franchise title which is not listed as an exception but has its own unique separate universe, please comment before nominating.

Do not be afraid to use or suggest non-canonical fandom tags, especially when an appropriate shared universe tag does not already exist. The mods can help you select one if you are unsure what to use for your nominations.

If you believe the best fandom tag to combine a shared universe under has changed or there are other new developments in your fandom we should be aware of that might affect the shared universe list, please let us know! Or if you spot any doubles, misfiled fandoms, random pairings popping up under other fandoms or pairings that don't qualify, comment here. We're going to do our best to wrangle as we go like usual.

This year's round will begin very soon, and the rules for 2023 will be the same as last year except for our defaulting policy. Our previous policy stood us in good stead when we first took over as mods, but going forward we will be trialling no penalties for defaulting regardless of timing or number. Anyone with a penalty in place for submitting placeholder works or similar should email us at femslashexmod@gmail.com to discuss eligibility. Everyone else will be welcome to sign-up.
