2014: Nomination Discussions (and other details)

Nominations begin in a week, which is far, but it does mean we have more time to discuss them. Post what you're thinking about nominating in comments, discuss eligibility, offer up free spaces.

I have a couple of questions for people in the relevant fandoms:
1. Last year, some Tolkien fans indicated that they'd prefer to be split up into Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit (All Media Types), and The Lord of the Rings (All Media Types). Is that okay?
2. MCU technically includes Agents of SHIELD, do the AoS people want to be included with MCU? Not being included would prevent crossover pairings such as May/Romanov.
3. I'm planning to do comics by universe again, as that seemed to work last year.
4. There's no way that I know of to merge Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: The Series without including the rest of Jossverse. Sorry. (Unless someone's fixed that since last year?)
5. The Star Trek tv shows can't be nominated as one either, not without including the new movies. Again, sorry, as this does cut down on crossover pairings, which are fun.
6. There is no six!
7. I can't think of a seven, but do let me know how you'd like your fandom nominated, especially things with multiple parts and/or adaptations.

Nominations will open at 5pm Pacific Daylight Time (all events will take place at 5pm PDT).

That said, if people use the nomination post and nominate characters in something like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms", or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel the TV Series" you can get the effect looked for.

I'm curious what's going to happen with Sailor Moon. I know there's the manga (and I'm not sure if the Codename: Sailor V manga is going to be, or can be, included with that) and the original anime and the Sailor Moon Crystal anime, and apparently also a live-action thing about which I know nothing. I'd be interested in receiving fic or art for the manga and either anime, though I doubt I'd be allowed to nominate all three, but I'd only be interested in writing fic for Sailor Moon Crystal and maybe the manga (I'm not as up to date on the original anime as I would need to be to feel comfortable writing fic for it).

And I'm gonna track the previous post in anticipation of an answer to littlerobbergirl's question, because that answer impacts my nomination slate.

The manga and original anime are different enough, as far as I know, to be nominated separately. I haven't seen Crystal, so I don't know about that. Maybe someone could mention it?

The general policy has been that fandoms that are pretty close to their film adaptions (Hunger Games, Harry Potter) are just nominated under "[Fandom Name] (All Media Types)."

Fandoms that have significant differences between adaptations. (such as A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones, or the original FMA animie and the manga) are nominated separately like so: Game of Thones (TV Show) and "A Song of Ice and Fire - G.R.R. Martin" or "Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 Manga)" and "Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood and Manga)".

There seem to be two categories on AO3 at this time: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (TV), but I don't know if the last one refers to the the '90s anime or the live action thing.

i'm thinking of nominating some canons which are definitely not that popular, so i figure i might as well post about them to see if there's interest?

1) Nabari no Ou and the pairings Ichiki/Hyouka and Subaru/Katarina.

2) Memento Mori and Hyo-shin/Shi-Eun or Shi-Eun/Min-ah. (one of which is canon in the source material, if anyone is looking for more super SUPER depressing movies with canon f/f relationships to watch)

The Percy Jackson AO3 tags are kind of a mess and I'm not sure how would be best to nominate them. As far as I can see, there are four different fandom tags that are being used right now: "Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Related Fandoms - All Media Types", "Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan", "The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan", and "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)". The PJO and HOO books take place in the same universe and continuity with mostly the same characters and I would recommend combining them as one. The only problem I potentially see with going the blanket "& Related Fandoms - All Media Types" route is that the 2010 movie and its sequel have different continuity, plot, and characterization from the books and would be more akin to the ASOIAF vs. Game of Thrones split. On the other hand, I'd be surprised if anyone would nominate specifically the movie canon for a fest like this (but I guess you never know?). So anyway. Thoughts?

Yeah, I was thinking about this, too, and I agree that combining them as one makes sense. Obviously there are a lot of potential ships that are only relevant to one series or the other, but I could see, for example, someone wanting Annabeth/Reyna and being unsure whether to request PJO or HOO if they were split by title. I was wondering if it would be possible to lump the two books together in a way that excludes the movie canon, though? (Perhaps some kind of "Percy Jackson Universe - Rick Riordan" tag akin to the other "____ Universe - Author" tags on AO3 that work to lump together books in a shared universe that aren't necessarily all under one official title.) Then again, it looks like the "& Related Fandoms - All Media Types" tag was used last year, so unless it created some kind of problem, I'd think it would probably be fine. Like you said, it doesn't seem too likely anyone would specifically request PJO movie canon in this sort of fest.

I would be in favor of combining the two, because I am all about the crossover pairings -- May/Romanov, definitely, but also Mama May/Peggy Carter. Also, then I only have to use one slot for those pairings and my MCU-only femslash pairings.

But even if they were combined, I can't say for 100% sure that I'd request/offer in the combined category (though as I said, it's more likely) so I probably shouldn't be the deciding vote.

It would be more than okay with me personally. The problem with nominating everything under J.R.R. Tolkien - Works as an umbrella fandom is that Tolkien's legendarium does have a large number of female characters and it felt quite limiting to have to divide the six alotted pairings in three largely separate source texts with very few overlaps and fandoms that can be very different (e.g. someone who saw the Hobbit movies may not necessarily have read the Silmarillion). Allowing nominations for the three suggestions sounds great. In other exchanges I've sometimes seen people prefer to nominate only the LotR/Hobbit book-only fandoms, but I suppose that would be a case to specify in the author letter?

Mmmmm... I'm not sure how well that would work? Though I suppose it goes both ways with signing up. If I sign up requesting "all media types" hopefully I'd be open to getting something that was either book or movie. If I signed up offering the same, hopefully I'd be comfortable writing or drawing either, but I see the potential for that to run into conflicting expectations.

You can request up to six pairings, and offer ten, would that be enough for you? If you wanted more than that, you'd have to offer/request "any" which is where you might get matched with AoS. You wouldn't be matched on any pairing out didn't offer.

I was wondering, I know that Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 were done as seperate fandoms last time, but would it be easier to have them as one combined fandom this time?

Reasons for: Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2 is a pre-existing tag on AO3, which collects works tagged as either (or both) fandoms. Both take place in the same world, and most of the characters in the first game reappear in the second.

Reasons against: Many characters in the second game aren't in the first. Also, less people have played/are familiar with the second game.

Plus it's mostly solo titles I'm reading right now, so I tend to miss anyone who only appears in team titles, if that makes any sense.)

Also, just to clarify for myself, we're nominating fandoms all over again, from scratch? I know some fests operate under a "it was nominated last year so it's in for good" policy, so I just wanted to check. :)

I think most people want to combine them, so we probably will. It's the same universe, after all. Comics will be separate for sure. It doesn't make sense to combine them.
