Final Nominations Clarifications

All tagset clean up has been completed, with only a handful of outstanding nominations remaining in the queue for clarification. In addition to the issues below, we had some wandering tags in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Disney, Dragon Age, Emma, Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, Old Guard, Riverdale, Tomb Raider, and Witcher. If you nominated in these fandoms, please double check the tagset to make sure your ships are in the correct place and let us know if anything needs correcting. If you nominated something not mentioned in this post but it hasn’t shown up correctly in the tagset yet, please do also let us know.

A Midsummer Night's Dream - All Media Types
We believe this tag may be too broad, given the number of Shakespeare adaptions. Can the nominator(s) comment with a link to their page and whether they prefer a specific adaption? If we don’t hear back, we will change to Midsummer Night's Dream - Shakespeare.

Edit: we are approving this as Shakespeare, but will take corrections (only from the proven nominator) if needed up until sign-ups start.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Sabrina Spellman/The Weird Sisters has been deleted as ineligible, however ‘Agatha/Dorcas/Prudence Night/Sabrina Spellman’ is already in the tagset. If there is another group of Weird Sisters we are not aware of, can the nominator please comment with their preferred tag (that has all characters individually listed)

Crossovers
The following tags are pending/removed. Can the nominator(s) please comment confirming fandoms and link to their nomination page. If we don’t hear back we’ll take our best guess or reject if we can’t identify a likely fandom
Carolyn Martens/Jane Tennison
Carolyn Martens/Stella Gibson
Stella Gibson/Bedelia Du Maurier
Anck Su Namun/Santanico Pandemonium | Kisa
Diana (Wonder Woman)/Evy Carnahan O'Connell
Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Marion Ravenwood
Stella Gibson/Jane Tennison
Kang Seulgi/Lee Sunmi
Im Nayeon/Kim Yubin

Edit: we are approving all of these, according to best guess or suggestions from other participants where needed. But we will take corrections (only from the proven nominator) if needed up until sign-ups start.

Fate/Grand Order
Should this be combined with the other Fate/ canons? Any Fate/ fans are welcome to drop into the comments with relevant canon information for or against.

How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal
Annalise Keating/Olivia Pope is currently wandering between both. Can fans of either show please drop into the comments to discuss whether these fandoms should be combined? Otherwise we will move to Crossovers.

Legend of Zelda
We have tags wandering between Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors, and Twilight Princess. Could nominator(s) please confirm which fandoms they intended (with a link to their nominations page), or if Zelda fans can identify any ships which do or do not belong in their fandoms that would be appreciated.

Persona Series
All Persona tags have been combined under the Series umbrella tag. If your ship has gone astray, please let us know!

Picnic at Hanging Rock
Nominations got a little jumbled between the TV and 1975 version. Miranda Reid has been corrected to Miranda St Clare for the 1975 tags, and everything else has been moved according to name. If Mrs. Appleyard/Mlle. de Poitiers was also intended for Picnic at Hanging Rock 1975, please link your nominations page and drop us a comment.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails (Video Games)
Trails of Cold Steel and Trails in the Sky have been approved under the above umbrella tag.

The Magnus Archives
Naomi Herne/Any Female Lukas - Any ships are not allowed. Can the nominator please link their nomination page and confirm whether they prefer a specific Lukas or Original Female Lukas? Otherwise we will reject before sign-ups open.

偶像练习生 | Idol Producer, SNH48, and THE9 (Band)
We have some tags wandering between combinations of the above fandoms. Can anyone confirm which fandoms these ships belong to, or whether these fandoms should be combined? If nominator(s) wanted a specific fandom from the above, please drop a link to your nominations page in the comments and confirm the fandom.
Dai Meng/Yu Yan
Dai Yanni/Song Xinran
Fei Qinyuan/Sun Rui
Kong Xue'er/Xu Jiaqi
Liu Lingzi/Sun Rui
An Qi | Babymonster/Xu Jiaqi
Sun Rui/Xu Jiaqi
Sun Rui/Yu Shuxin
Xu Jiaqi/Yu Yan

To find your nominations page, simply go to the tagset, click on My Nominations, and copy the URL. Only mods can view your nominations page. At this stage we expect sign-ups may open at least a few hours early on the 16th, and will take clarifications and corrections up until then.

Not the nominator, but a Legend of Zelda fan:

Breath of the Wild - all looks good there.

Twilight Princess - the only one that is in the right place is Midna/Zelda; the rest do not make an appearance in Twilight Princess
  • Cia/Impa (Legend of Zelda) - this is Hyrule Warriors
  • Cia/Zelda (Legend of Zelda) - this is Hyrule Warriors
  • Impa/Sheik (Legend of Zelda) - this can be either Hyrule Warriors or Ocarina of Time; would need to default to the nominator
  • Impa/Zelda (Legend of Zelda) - this could be any of the games tbh. Of the ones nominated, this is either Hyrule Warriors or Breath of the Wild; would need to default to the nominator
  • Linkle (Legend of Zelda)/Zelda (Legend of Zelda) - this is Hyrule Warriors
  • Urbosa/Zelda (Legend of Zelda) - this is Breath of the Wild. Very recently, there was an announcement for a new Hyrule Warriors game, but A) it's not out yet and B) it is distinct from the original Hyrule Warriors in that it's called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Hyrule Warriors - all characters nominated do appear in Hyrule Warriors, except for Urbosa/Zelda. Due to this being a crossover game of sorts, it might be safe to double-check with nominators in case they wanted a specific canon over another for the pairings.

Hope that helps!

So technically all the games in Legend of Zelda are in the same universe. There was no official Word of God regarding this until the timeline was published in 2011. The gist of it is that certain characters are reincarnations of deities/heroes: Zelda is always the reincarnation of the goddess Hylia; Ganon/Ganondorf is always the reincarnation of the god Demise; and Link is always the reincarnation of Hylia's chosen hero. And these three characters are in almost every game as their destined role. The only other reoccurring character (off the top of my head) is Impa. Even then, she's not in every game. Most other characters are unique to their game.

That all said, the reoccurring characters are not always the same character in that they have varying personalities, appearances, and backstory. For example, Ocarina of Time Zelda is different from Twilight Princess Zelda and Wind Waker Zelda and Breath of the Wild Zelda. Each game stands on its own, but there are a couple of games that are direct sequels. For example, Majora's Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time; A Link Between Worlds is a direct sequel to Link to the Past; Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are both direct sequels to Wind Waker. (I'm possibly forgetting a couple, but this is off the top of my head) Despite the "official" timeline, most of the connections between games are easter eggs or heavily implied (like the Temple of Time from Ocarina of Time showing up in both Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild or the spirit training Link in Twilight Princess is implied to be the Link from Ocarina of Time). But each game can be played on its own without needing context from other games.

Hyrule Warriors is a bit harder, because it's a case of "let's just take ALL these characters across the series and throw them into a fighting game". The Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Impa in this game are unique to Hyrule Warriors while the other characters are brought in from their own worlds or are original characters in the Hyrule Warriors universe (namely Cia and Lana). So I'd imagine if someone asked for Cia/Zelda, they'd want the Hyrule Warriors version of Zelda and not another one.

For other exchanges I've been in, most people are cool with keeping the games separate due to it only really being 3-4~ reoccurring characters. I do know some people in the fandom like playing with the reincarnation aspect and applying that to other characters, but I'm not sure that warrants meshing every character from the series into a single fandom, so to speak. Definitely something to ask for the next round, though!

How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal are technically in the same universe, as there were a few crossover episodes when the Murder crew went to Washington to argue in front of the Supreme Court. I'm not sure how you'd combine them into one fandom though.

I'm not the nominator for these, but: Anck Su Namun and Evy Carnahan O'Connell are characters from The Mummy films, and Marion Ravenwood is from the Indiana Jones franchise. (Not sure what version of Wonder Woman they mean, of course, and I'm not familiar with whatever fandom Santanico Pandemonium comes from.)

Santanico Pandemonium is from From Dusk Til Dawn, though it's not clear if the nominator wants tv show or movies (the tv show has the bigger exchange presence ime, but she's in both) Kisa!Santanico is from the tv version

What's the deal with uncategorized fandoms at this point? Will they be categorized by the time signups start? Three of my noms are in that group and two of them are just books, straightforward to categorize. Do you need input from us on all of that at all? Thanks for all the work you do!

"Uncategorized Fandoms" just means that the fandom is rare enough that no one in the backend at AO3 has given it a category yet. They definitely don't do this until there is at least one posted work for a fandom. It doesn't have any impact on anything for the users, at least in exchanges. But it's a backend tag wrangling issue, not one exchange mods can fix.

Although some ships can be in all three of those fandoms (SNH48, Idol Producer, The9), I nominated them in the fandoms (that make the most sense for the ship)--not sure why they overlapped!

Dai Meng/Yu Yan: Idol Producer
Dai Yanni/Song Xinran: Idol Producer
Fei Qinyuan/Sun Rui: SNH48
Kong Xue'er/Xu Jiaqi: The9
Liu Lingzi/Sun Rui: Idol Producer
An Qi | Babymonster/Xu Jiaqi: The9
Sun Rui/Xu Jiaqi: SNH48
Sun Rui/Yu Shuxin: Idol Producer
Xu Jiaqi/Yu Yan: The9

Thank you! AO3 will associate ships with multiple fandoms sometimes, regardless of what fandom they're nominated under. These should all be tied to the proper fandom now!

I'm not the nominator, so ignore this comment if I shouldn't have said anything. But I have an educated guess for these two pairings:

Crossovers:
Carolyn Martens/Stella Gibson: Carolyn Martens (Killing Eve (TV 2018)), Stella Gibson (The Fall (TV 2013))
Stella Gibson/Bedelia Du Maurier: Stella Gibson (The Fall (TV 2013)), Bedelia Du Maurier (Hannibal (TV))

Likewise Jane Tennison from Carolyn Martens/Jane Tennison and Stella Gibson/Jane Tennison is probably Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect (UK).

I nominated Carolyn Martens/Jane Tennison at https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/4777/nominations/166498 and it is indeed Killing Eve (TV 2018) and Prime Suspect (UK) respectively. Thank you and sorry for the missing specification!

Nominated Stella Gibson/Jane Tennison and can confirm it's Stella Gibson (The Fall) and Jane Tennison (Prime Suspect).

Fate/Grand Order is a phone game spinoff that centers around original characters and also borrows a lot of characters from elsewhere in the franchise for a new story. Combining it with the rest of the franchise would provide no benefit to the fans that I can think of and would make most of the ships considerably harder to request or offer.

Does this challenge have an existing ruling for Avengers Academy? It should be a similar case.

Hello! Another different person here, just jumping in to try and help out a bit:

The Fate/ series is a franchise of anime, novels and video games that share a broad conceptual premise: basically, they're all about people with magical powers who can summon historical and mythological figures to fight on their behalf. While the mythological figures who appear in the various parts of the franchise tend to remain broadly similar, personality and finer aspects of those characters, as well as continuity/worldbuilding-related stuff and the human cast of character all change between entries in the franchise. (So, for example, both the anime Fate/Stay Night and the game Fate/Grand Order feature 'Saber', a summoned warrior who's the spirit of genderswapped King Arthur, but the actual characterization-related aspects of her vary heavily between the two series.)

The main Fate/ anime continuity mostly revolves around groups of people and their summoned warriors fighting in modern-day Japan in order to gain possession of powerful magical artifacts. Fate/Grand Order is a sort of AU concept of that where a group of magical researchers find out the world's going to end and the only way to stop it is to gather all the magic artifacts, so the protagonist and their summoned warrior gang have to time travel to various periods to save the world.

If I had to compare it to something, I think the original Star Trek TV series vs. the Star Trek reboot movies might be the best comparison? Similar characters with the same names filling similar roles, but the fine details of who those characters are and what the world is are all very different.

(And Avengers Academy is a cell phone game - it was a canonical high school AU where the Marvel heroes and villains were reimagined as teens who attended the same superhero boarding school while learning to harness their powers.)

Kang Seulgi/Lee Sunmi and Im Nayeon/Kim Yubin are both kpop rpf ships, though the women are from different groups. While the nominator is probably more familiar with their fandom's disambig conventions than me, something like
Kang Seulgi (Red Velvet)/Lee Sunmi (Wonder Girls)
Im Nayeon (Twice)/Kim Yubin (Wonder Girls)

is probably fine - Sunmi and Yubin are both solo artists currently, but started in Wonder Girls.

Critical Role

(Sorry for All The Comments)

Can you change Raven Queen (Dungeons & Dragons)/Vex'ahlia (Critical Role) to The Raven Queen/Vex'ahlia (Critical Role) or some other variant that removes the D&D-specific part of the tag? D&D Raven Queen and Critical Role Raven Queen are different characters, it's just an extremely poor canonical on AO3's part.

Re: Critical Role

[personal profile] fiachairecht 2020-09-15 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair! I'm not the nominator, but I've nominated the ship before and had my attempted disambigs get synned to the '(Dungeons & Dragons)' canonical, so it's a fairly common problem. I've never seen it intended as a crossover, bu I'm happy if you want to ask the nominator.
