Nominations - Clarification Post 1
Our first full pass through the queue has been completed, if your nominations were made before today and are not either covered below or already in the tagset drop us a comment.

Please check the rules and guidelines before nominating! Thank you to everyone who has been submitting correctly, it makes things much quicker for us. We have been correcting things where we easily can so far, but we will stop approving incorrect nominations if they continue to increase in frequency. In particular:
  • check your franchise against the shared universe list! Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dragon Age, and a few other franchises seem to be particularly prone. If your relationships need to be split between fandom tags based on the above list your nominations won't be approved until they're submitted under the correct fandoms

  • Crossovers submitted under a single fandom or submitted without fandom details won't be approved until they've been edited or moved under the correct fandom of Crossovers - Fandom

  • OFC ships should not be requested using canonical plural tags. We will continue to assume pairings are intended if we're correcting the tag, but please use either [Canon Character]/Original Female Character or [Canon Character]/Original Female Character/Original Female Character(/etc. for however many characters you want) for poly.

Fandoms that require clarification:
  • DC Extended Universe - has been nominated and the tags appear at first glance to align with the current movieverse. Is this a better tag than DC Cinematic Universe for some reason, does it refer to another branch of DC (eg. comics) we aren't aware of, or has it been nominated in error? we will used Extended instead of Cinematic for the movieverse going forward, anything already nominated under Cinematic will be combined

  • Fallout: New Vegas - has been combined with Fallout (Video Games), drop us a comment if you disagree and want to discuss Fallout

  • Fire Emblem Series - Fire Emblem has usually been approved under separate fandoms, is there a case for shared universe/combining? If not, can the nominator for Series please alter their nominations to be specific.

  • She-Ra - we're assuming the 2018 reboot should be kept separate to the original, but can fans confirm or deny we've got that right before we start approving? Please continue to nominate 2018 separately

  • Tomb Raider - last year Tomb Raider & Related Fandoms was nominated, this year Tomb Raider (Video Games) in the queue. Should the fandom be split because of the movies or should it be combined again this year?

  • X-Men Comics - X-Men Evolution has been approved, can the X-Men Comicsverse nominator separate by universe according to the Marvel Comics shared universe rule

  • 拝啓、兄さん様 | Haikei Niisan-sama | Dear Brother (Manga) - pairings nominated under this fandom all appear to be linked to the fandom Oniisama E, can anyone confirm whether these are the same fandom?

Pairings that require clarification:
  • Crossovers - can the nominators for: Lara Croft/Diana, Peggy Carter/Diana, Jubilation Lee/Dawn Summers, Kimberly Hart/Jubilation Lee, Mona Wu/Jane Austen, and Rani Chandra/Charlie, please alter their nominations to add fandoms or specify which version of each character they want. If the nominator of Hermione Granger/Mildred Hubble also wanted a particular version of Mildred, drop us a comment

  • Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey - Original Bronze Rider: bronze riders appear to be all male characters, can the nominator provide more information on eligibility or do we need to alter the tag to specify OFC?

  • Good Omens (TV) - Crowley/Sappho: does Sappho appear in the show or is inferred to have met the characters at some point, or should this be moved to Crossovers?

  • I Claudius - Livia Drusilla/Any is ineligible. Please specify which characters you want in the ship

  • Marathon (Video Games) - Leela/Re'eer: Re'eer appears to use male pronouns, can the nominator provide more information on eligibility?

  • Ocean's 8 - Daphne Kluger/Everyone is ineligible. Please specify which characters you want in the ship

  • The Only Harmless Great Thing - Brooke Bolander - can the nominator confirm whether there's only one Translator (is it Topsy's translator?) or whether we need to alter the tag to be more specific

  • Star Trek: Classic - Gaila/Nyota was nominated under Classic. Did the nominator intend the inferred character Prime Gaila, or should it be moved to crossovers?

  • The X-Files - Dana Scully/Clarice Starling has been nominated under X-Files instead of as a crossover, please alter your nomination

If anything appears to be rejected on your nominations page, please check the tagset to see if a duplicate was approved. If something isn't in the tagset and was rejected in error please let us know! Or if you spot duplicates or anything else odd, drop us a note so we can check it.

Click here to nominate some more femslash.

Nominations will remain open until 9pm EDT, 11 September, 2019.

Whoops. My apologies for messing up that nomination. Sappho does not appear in the show. I was thinking of the historical character, so I guess it would be a Crossover with Historical RPF?

Sorry for making more work for you. Cheers.

That's okay! We meant to keep unapproved until the first clarification post and then accidentally approved it anyway, so it's on us that you can't change it ;) It's an easy enough fix, it's just more time consuming so we don't like be doing loads and loads of corrections - but one or two here and there isn't a big deal at all.

DC Extended Universe is the same as DC Cinematic Universe. DC officially started calling it "DCEU" after the fandom tag was already in place!

X-Men Evolution is an entirely different continuity to X-Men Comics or any of the movies and should be separate. It's a high school setting and the characters and relationships can be quite different!

Ah, good to know! We'll switch to using Extended then, if that's the more familiar tag to people.

We can definitely keep Evolution and the movies separate - I assume the X-Men (Comicverse) tag is appropriate for everything else, or should we be asking people to discuss which other titles to separate?

X-Men (Comicverse) contains lots and lots and lots of different continuities! The most common ones to be separated out in ficathons recently are 616, Exiles, Battleworlds and Ultimates, but I guess you'd want to wait to see if anyone nominates those specific continuities first? 616 is the "main" comics continuity.

AH, duh, I can't believe I forgot X-Men is a Marvel thing. Thanks! Okay, in that case it sounds like I should be asking the Comicverse nominator to specify universes, but er correct me if I'm still misunderstanding something comics related haha.

Some ficathons specify comics titles, some just go for whichever continuity and then people can pick characters they know! "X-Men (Comicsverse)" is probably fine as a grouping, people will understand that.

Does that clash with our Marvel Comics rule to nominate by universe (including 616 etc) though? Or would X-Men 616 be a separate thing again? Sorry for all the questions, I'm not very across different comics continuities and don't want to duplicate things by accident.

If you want one universe one fandom, then Marvel 616 would be it (covering comics Avengers, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye comics, Young Avengers, X-Men to mention some popular femslash titles!), but people often do nominate X-Men separately.

Okay great, thanks again for clarifying for me, I really appreciate it. I'll leave it as is requesting to split based on other Marvel comics as that sounds most in line with our usual shared universe rules, but if the X-Men Comicsverse nominator or anyone else interested in X-Men comics shows up wanting to discuss I can always open it back up for discussion then.

Hi,

I nominated Leela/Re'eer, and I would like to clarify that in the two terminals in which Re'eer is mentioned by name, no personal pronouns are used (http://marathon.bungie.org/story/wheresome.html , last terminal and http://marathon.bungie.org/story/thingwhatkicks.html , second terminal). There is another terminal on "Thing What Kicks" in which Durandal refers to the commander of the garrison as "he," but this could refer to a different commander or just be a mistaken assumption on Durandal's part. Fandom has written both male and female Re'eer, but I personally have always written female Re'eer and nominated the ship in this spirit. If it would help to edit the nomination to "Leela/Female Re'eer," I am happy to do so.

Thanks for popping in! Looks like we maybe got lead in the wrong direction by this wiki page. Does it refer to another Re'eer, a different version of Re'eer, or has the wiki writer just assumed a gender in absence of canon confirmation? We can edit the tag to specify the terminal/branch of canon (or separate the fandom if it's not a consistent shared universe, if you prefer) or use Female Re'eer or something else depending on your answer and what makes most sense to you/any other Marathon fans that might happen to jump into the comments.

the ways of tea and failure[personal profile] hokuton_punch on September 2nd, 2019 03:33 pm (UTC)
No problem! I think the wiki page probably made an assumption in absence of firm canon, which is understandable. (The interpretation of Re'eer's translation of the Narsh prophecy is also somewhat suspect...) I think probably editing my nomination to "Female Re'eer" would probably be the most workable solution, since it's not something confirmed in canon, if that's okay with you.

That sounds like a good edit option to me too then, thank you! There's a chance we'll remember them now, but if you think of it (assuming you nominate the character again in a future round, of course) you might want to drop us a pre-emptive comment next time. Female Re'eer sounds most appropriate, but usually we use that format for playable characters where the player chooses the gender and if we don't remember the name there's a decent chance we may head off down the same wrong wiki rabbithole next time, haha.

I nominated The Only Harmless Great Thing, and there is only one translator in the novella with any kind of presence, the translator for the unnamed elephant matriarch. Neither the translator or this particular matriarch are named in the story, but if we need specificity maybe "Elephant Matriarch's Translator"?

For the record, there is one other mention of an unnamed translator, the court-appointed translator for the elephants during the Radium Elephant Trials, but I think it can be inferred that they are not the same person.

Okay, awesome, I'll use that suggestion and change it to refer to the Matriarch. I tried googling and the first mention I found was Topsy's translator, followed by some excerpts about the Matriarch, but I wasn't sure how present they both were or if they were perhaps the same person. Thanks!

Not the nominator, but there is nothing in Pern canon that says a woman cannot impress a bronze dragon and canonical proof that their assumptions about who can impress what are wrong (when Mirrim impresses Path). Bronze dragons are just never given access to women in the hatching grounds in canon.

I nominated a set of X-Men comics pairings. Should I change their fandom to Marvel 616?

I also nominated the Dragonriders of Pern OFCs. There are no female bronze riders in canon, but since they're original characters I didn't think that mattered. Should I change that to Original Female Bronze Rider?

If they're from 616 that would be ideal, thank you!

We didn't worry about tweaking the others either, you're right, it is fairly explanatory and they're allowed as original characters either way. But I just want to be super clear if the idea of a bronze rider runs counter to canon. I think we approved it with the others already, so I can change that for you now.

I changed the X-Men nominations to Marvel 616.

For the dragon rider nominations, for the sake of consistency I'd either specify gender in all cases or in no cases. IIRC there is one canon female blue rider, and green riders can canonically be male or female. And as the anon commenter said, the whole color/gender matching thing is at least partly a social convention.

Good to know, thank you! I'm not very familiar with the wider continuity of Tomb Raider, can all the games and movies be considered the same universe or are there plot/worldbuilding/etc. inconsistencies between different versions that might constitute a reason to split them?

welsper[personal profile] welsper on September 3rd, 2019 10:22 pm (UTC)
I am afraid I am not overtly familiar with anything but the rebooted video games, but they are not all the same universe.

I think all the Tomb Raiders before the 2013 Survivor Timeline are about the same Lara Croft. Then the movies with Angelina Jolie might be based upon those.

Starting with Tomb Raider (2013), the games are about an entirely different Lara Croft. Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider also belong to this reboot. The newest Tomb Raider movie is also based upon these Survivor Timeline games, but merely inspired by it. (I think, I haven't seen it.)

Thank you, that's really helpful! Someone has jumped in down thread with additional info about the other games. It sounds like, if there's a few different versions of Lara, that it makes sense to split them. But I'd like to know what you think if you have a moment to check out the other subthread and my proposed fandom tags.

vivaforever597[personal profile] vivaforever597 on September 9th, 2019 01:30 am (UTC)
My guess is that "related fandoms" was used last year to include the Dark Horse comics, which are set in the universe of the games but with some canon divergence and additional characters. From my point of view, it's not an issue to use "video game" instead, but I guess technically "related fandoms" would be more accurate since people might incorporate stuff from the comics.

There are three different timelines among the video games (the original series, the Legend/Anniversary/Underworld reboot, and the 2013 "survivor" reboot), but they don't actually have different fandom tags on AO3 and all go under "video game."

I wouldn't worry about the movies at all - unless I'm recalling them very badly, they don't even have any major female characters other than Lara. But the two Angelina Jolie movies are based on the original timeline, while the Alicia Vikander movie is based on the survivor timeline, both with some divergences. The Top Cow comic series is also based on the original timeline, and the Dark Horse comic series is also based on the survivor timeline, while there have ALSO been novels based on all three timelines.

Thank you for jumping in, that's very helpful! I've done some more googling and the 2018 movie seems to have some backstory differences, plus there's a potential sequel that could change things further and at least a few female supporting characters in the first movie. The Angelina Jolie movies do seem to have an even more male dominant cast though, you're correct.

We use non-canonical fandom tags for other universes that need to be split for reasons like this, so we can definitely still split regardless of the usual video game tag. It sounds like if, for example, someone wanted original series Lara paired with someone from a different timeline there'd be differences between that pairing vs. one the same pairing with the Lara from the same timeline?

If that's correct, I'd propose splitting nominations between the following, and any comics or novels can be linked to their respective timelines (or people can make a case by case argument to separate the movies/books/comics further if they think that's more appropriate):
Tomb Raider - Original Timeline, which would include the Angelina Jolie movies
Tomb Raider - Legend Reboot
Tomb Raider - 2013 Survivor Reboot, or we could use one of the Tomb Raider 2013 canonical tags, but I don't think that's as clear
Tomb Raider (2018)

I'll ask the other nominator for their opinion, let me know if that works for you or if I've misunderstood anything about the canon!

Probably, yes. That being said, in my opinion, given the relatively small size of the fandom and its overwhelming preference for the survivor reboot, I don't think it's necessary to split the tag, but nor do I think it's harmful. If you were to split it, I'd suggest doing it along the lines you suggested:

• Tomb Raider - Original Timeline
• Tomb Raider - Legend Timeline
• Tomb Raider - 2013 Timeline ["survivor" is a term used by the fandom, but not an official one; since the first game is just called Tomb Raider, it's usually abbreviated as TR2013 to differentiate it from the original Tomb Raider]

The 2018 movie could be split out from the latter as well to make "Tomb Raider (2018)," depending on your judgment.
