Nominations clarifications #2

General reminder to please check the shared fandom list. We will not be approving incorrect franchise fandoms, and you risk your nominations being rejected if they start to block the queue - Star Trek nominators in particular currently need to double check their fandom tags. Update: Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Dragon Age fans, please also double check your nominations against the shared fandom list.

Also a reminder that & relationships (ie. gen) are not allowed in this exchange. All pairings should be femslash pairings, with a / to indicate romance. We usually correct gen tags into ships as we go, assuming errors, but we’ve now had a spread of nominations where the same characters are nominated twice - once as gen and once as femslash. Duplicate gen nominations are and will continue to be rejected. If anyone has questions or is confused about this, feel free to drop by our rules post to discuss.

Hannibal Lecter Series - All Media Types
We believe the TV and movie series are adaptions of the books, so a shared universe tag may not be appropriate. Law & Order

The Legend of Heroes (Video Games)
We have Trails of Cold Steel and Trails in the Sky nominated. It appears to be an 'interconnected' series of games according to wikis - ~~is this a shared universe, or should it be handled separately like Final Fantasy?~~ Update: The Legend of Heroes: Trails is currently proposed as a shared universe fandom tag. Please drop into the comments to discuss if you would prefer a different shared tag.

the Legend of Heroes Trails games are in the same Universe and they do overlap so I guess it could be put into the same category?

Great! There doesn't appear to be an existing umbrella tag for them on AO3, would The Legend of Heroes (Video Games) or The Legend of Heroes: Trails (Video Games) work as the fandom? Or feel free to suggest something else, if there's something more appropriate.

Seconding the above that the Trails games are a single universe with much overlap in characters, locations, etc.

For the umbrella tag, I'd probably suggest the second one (specifying Trails as the series), as I believe there are other non-Trails-adjacent games under the Legend Of Heroes franchise.

The trails series is also called the Kiseki series, it might be under that on ao3.

Nothing is jumping out at me with Kiseki that isn't linked to just a single game, though I could be missing something. Would people identify it easily as Legends of Heroes: Trails, or do you think we need Kiseki included? Multiple names are very welcome in the tag, but I'm afraid I only speak English so I'll need suggestions for how to structure and word any alternative options.

The Hannibal movies and books might be in continuity with each other, but the TV series goes in its own direction and has several substantially different characters. Relevant to this exchange, the TV series has at least two swaps from cis male to cis female characters (Freddie Lounds and Alana Bloom).

Seconding the request to not have Bryan Fuller's Hannibal tv series linked in with any other Hannibal media; it's definitely adapting it in a way that's distinct enough to warrant its own tag.

I don't know the books/movies, so I can't comment on those specifically.

Yup, Legends is in the shared fandom list. I wasn't sure when you'd be back with your allergies so I went ahead and fixed the fandom for you, but invariably when we 'fix' too many fandoms AO3 starts giving us unexpected bugs and quirks which is why we usually ask people to fix it in their nominations instead.

Not the nominator, but there aren't really distinct Biddies*; if they don't show up to clarify then they probably meant Sarah Alder/Biddies as poly.

Thank you, I'm not at all familiar with the fandom so that's very useful information and I really appreciate the help! We normally try to avoid groups in places of characters, but if they act collectively this might be an exception. If the nominator shows up we can discuss whether Biddies or Biddie/Biddie/etc. (like how we handle Original character poly nominations) is best for what they're wanting out of the request.

Motherland was one of the fandoms with duplicate gen and femslash nominations, so I won't put it in yet unless we can confirm with the nominator either way.

Hi! I'm the nominator in question for Sarah Alder & The Biddies. I know when I nominated it I was thinking about more friendship than solid relationship, but I also didn't realize that given the way AO3 works, a lot of what was pulling could be considered gen.

Sara Alder/Tally Craven could cover "Sarah Alder/Biddy" because Tally becomes Biddy in the finale of the first season. Prior to that, viwers know the Biddies as a collective vs. a specific individual. Even when a Biddy is replaced (there was a specific ep about it), I don't think the person being replace or her replacement was named out loud.

All this to say, if you need to remove that part of the nomination, I'm totally okay with it.

If you do want Sara/Biddies in some configuration, that's totally fine - it just depends on what sort of requests you want to make. Forgive me if I'm assuming something wrong about the fandom/characters with my examples, but just based off what's in this thread we usually want to make sure that eg. someone who wants Sara/Biddy-Collective can't accidentally match to someone wanting Sara/Tally-as-Biddy or someone wanting Sara/Biddy/Biddy/Biddy/etc. with a specific number or configuration (eg. triad) of Biddies. Ships with multiple Biddies or specific Biddies are all welcome, as long as you can work out a way to nominate them clearly and distinctly.

If Tally wasn't always a Biddy, requesting the Biddy specific part of her storyline will be an optional detail and not a requirement for your creator. So if it's just the Biddies you're interested in and not the earlier part of Tally's arc, Sara/Tally might not be the best solution for what you want. Gen works also won't meet the minimum requirements for this exchange, so if you're more interested in friendship than romance you might not want to nominate the Biddies at all.

If you work out what sort of Biddy ship (or different Motherland ship, I don't mind swapping something else in for this rejected tag) you want, let me know and I can add it manually. I was trying to be careful to only reject gen nominations if there was already a matching femslash tag. I think the Biddies were the only exception, but if I missed anything else just link me to your nominations page and I can also replace them with their / equivalents as needed.

Sarah Alder/Original Biddy or Sarah Alder/Specific Biddy could cover hypothetical ships where it's just her and one other biddy rather than the collective of biddies.

Alder/Tally could encompass the period of Tally's plot where she is a biddy, but people might be interested in other Alder/biddy ships and I wouldn't think that someone interested in that should be redirected to requesting Alder/Tally.

Not the nominator, but Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU are shared-universe with a non-negligible character overlap (Abbie Carmichael in particular was an L&O regular who was on SVU a lot in the first season).

I forgot to check this to see how my nomination was doing, so I might be too late. But I nominated Bedelia Du Maurier/Clarice Starling under Hannibal Lecter Series - All Media Types.

I'm not sure how to handle this, as it's a crossover between the TV show and the books/movies.

Bedelia's in the TV show, Clarice is only in the books/movies. The pairing does have a tag and people use a variety of Hannibal options for it, but I think Hannibal Lecter Series - All Media Types is the most common pick.

I wrote it for the exchange in 2017 and tagged my fic under Hannibal (TV) and Hannibal Lecter Series - All Media Types. Maybe a mod can see how it was originally nominated?

I don't know if any of that helps.

Thanks for popping in! Because we use Hannibal (TV) as a separate fandom, any pairing with only one Hannibal (TV) pairing should be nominated under crossovers. Just make sure you note which character is Hannibal TV and which ones are books and/or movies when you format the tag.

Can you shed any light for us on whether the books and movies should be considered the same universe in future, or separate adaptions with different versions of Clarice?

Hi! It looks like quite a few pairings have migrated into The Witcher (TV) from the The Witcher (Video Game). I'm guessing all the ones without disambiguations were maybe nominated for the game? There are definitely some names in there I don't know as a show fan, and I think the games were nommed first.

Lol at least the books weren't nominated as well - that would've made this more complicated. ~~I think most of these characters come from the books first. (But not all, because that would be too easy.)~~

Renfri, Yennefer, Tissaia, Triss and Cirilla are in the show (and, apart from Renfri I think, the games). All the other characters in the tagset are from the games.

Looking at the pairings... Renfri/Yennfer is disambiguated, Triss/Yennefer is already duplicated (and so is Tissaia/Yennefer, but the non-disambiguated version doesn't seem to have wandered in that case? which is weird, since it's probably the biggest Witcher femslash ship and if any of these pairing tags is used across all three sections - mostly in the TV fandom - it's that one? or is that not how this tag wandering thing works? idk), Triss/Tissaia could be both show and games, and all the other pairings have at least one character who's not in the show.

I hope that's some help. (Seriously, so glad the books weren't nominated as well!)

Thank you so much! This was invaluable when I was untangling them. I think everything should be in its correct place now, and I've duplicated Triss/Tissaia to both fandoms. Looking at Tissaia/Yennefer, it could just be an association quirk where the piped version with both her names hasn't been linked to the TV series (yet). You're correct that that's how tag wandering works, but the consistency of where things wander and why is often beholden to the whims of tag wranglers.
