2022 Nominations Open!

We are starting nominations a little early today. If you haven't already please read the full 2022 rules and faq before you start nominating.

In short:
You may nominate up to ten fandoms with up to ten relationships in each.

All nominated characters must be female or genderqueer characters you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge

Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager). Crossovers submitted under a single fandom or submitted without fandom details after each name won't be approved until they've been corrected.

[Canonical Character]/Original Female Character is allowed. [Canonical Character]/Any is not allowed. The Character(s) version of OFC tags will no longer be used and any canonical nominations using this format will be approved without the plural. If nominating poly ships with original characters, please indicate the specific number of characters you would like included, eg. [Canonical Character]/Original Female Character/Original Female Character.

[Canonical Character]/[Unnamed Character] is allowed in cases where they were most likely a female or genderqueer character, but we don't know exactly who they were, for example: Galadriel/Legolas' Mother in The Hobbit fandom.

There will be one category for Original Work, in which you may nominate things such as Princess/Handmaiden, Mermaid/Ship Captain, or Starship Captain/Chief Engineer.

You may wish to drop down into the comments below to see what fandoms and pairings others are nominating, and how to nominate large/complicated fandoms. We will be continuing to wrangle most shared universe fandoms in the same manner as previous years, please check the list below before nominating.

Fandoms should be nominated according to shared universes. This means fandoms with common settings and characters or unique shared backstories and timelines, should be grouped together. Different versions of characters/timelines or unique adaptions should be nominated separately. Please note that:
All Media Type fandom tags may or may not be eligible, depending on whether AMT encompasses multiple versions of a character or multiple timelines.

RPF, Band, and other ‘real world’ characters should be grouped under the broadest fandom title that makes sense, trying to minimise the number of fandoms an individual character could belong to while also avoiding the fandom becoming unwieldy.

Many franchises are already in the shared universe list. Please check it thoroughly and nominate accordingly. If you are nominating a related franchise title which is not listed as an exception but has its own unique separate universe, please comment before nominating.

Do not be afraid to use or suggest non-canonical fandom tags, especially when an appropriate shared universe tag does not already exist. The mods can help you select one if you are unsure what to use for your nominations.

Arrowverse
Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, Constantine, and Legends of Tomorrow tv shows will be nominated together as "DC's Arrowverse"

Buffy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: The Series and assorted spinoffs will go together under "Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms"

Critical Role
All campaigns set in Exandria (including EXU campaigns) should be nominated under "Critical Role". Campaigns and one-shots with separate settings (e.g. Shadow of the Crystal Palace) should be nominated as separate fandoms.

Dangan
Combine all nominations under "Dangan Ronpa - All Media Types"

DC Comics
Main-continuity DC comics, including pre-Flashpoint and New 52, will be under "DCU (Comics)". Other DC universes such as Bombshells will be separate by universe

DC Movies
"DC Extended Universe" includes Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey 2020.

Doctor Who
Everything set in the Doctor Who universe can be nominated under "Doctor Who" (including Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood)

Disney
Disney Descendents, Maleficent (2014), and Ducktales (2017) should be nominated separately. Disney+ shows should be discussed in the comments below before nominating. “Disney - All Media Types" is to be used for all other Disney pairings, including Disney Princesses and pre-2017 Ducktales.

Dragon Age
All of Dragon Age goes together under "Dragon Age - All Media Types"

Fallen London
Fallon London should be combined with Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies nominations under "Fallen London | Echo Bazaar"

Fallout
All games should be combined under "Fallout (Video Games)", including Fallout: New Vegas

Fate/stay night Fandoms
Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night should be nominated under "Fate/stay night - All Media Types". Fate/Grand should be nominated separately.

Final Fantasy
FF X and FF X-2 will be nominated as "Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2"

Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones (TV) and A Song of Ice and Fire should be treated as separate fandoms

Hannibal
Hannibal (TV) should be nominated separately. Please comment to discuss first before nominating Hannibal movies or books. Crossovers between TV and other Hannibal titles should be nominated as Crossovers.

Harry Potter
Both the Harry Potter books and movies and Fantastic Beasts should be combined under "Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling". All associated tie-in media including games should be included under this tag.

Kamen Rider
Kamen Rider variations go together under "Kamen Rider - All Media Types"

Law and Order
Law and Order nominations should be combined under 'Law & Order'

Legend of Heroes
Trails games should be combined as The Legend of Heroes: Trails (Video Games). Please comment first to discuss before nominating non-Trails games.

Les Miserables
The Les Mis tag will be "Les Miserables (All Media Types)"

Life on Mars
Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars go together under "Life on Mars & Related Fandoms"

Madoka Magica
The Magia Record side game should be nominated separately to Madoka Magia.

Marvel Cinematic Universe
All of the MCU movies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Agent Carter will be listed under "Marvel Cinematic Universe". Disney+ shows will also be included under "Marvel Cinematic Universe".

Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics will be nominated by universe, for example: Marvel 616, Marvel Adventures, etc.

Marvel Netflix TV shows
Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, The Punisher, and Iron Fist will be listed together under "The Defenders (Marvel TV)"

Mass Effect
Mass Effect will be "Mass Affect - All Media Types" and will include Mass Effect Andromeda

Neon Genesis Evangelion
"Rebuild of Evangelion | Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition" should be nominated separately to Neon Genesis Evangelion. If nominating other parts of the franchise with significant story or character differences to the original canon, please comment first to discuss whether to split or combine fandom tags.

Once Upon A Time
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will be included with Once Upon A Time (TV)

Persona Series
All Persona games should be combined as Persona (Series)

Pokemon
Pokemon Games should be combined under "Pocket Monsters | Pokemon (Main Video Game Series)", while "Pocket Monsters SPECIAL | Pokemon Adventures" should be nominated separately.

Power Rangers
Power Rangers will be split into the movie tag "Power Rangers (2017)", and all shows will be combined under "Power Rangers (TV)"

Pretty Cure
All Pretty Cure series will be nominated together

Rune Factory
All Rune Factory series will be nominated together

Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon should nominated under:
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Manga/Crystal)
Sailor Moon (1992 Anime)

She-Ra
Nominate the original series and the 2018 reboot separately.

Star Trek
"Star Trek: Classic Timeline (All Series)" should be used to nominate all original continuity Star Trek properties including books and other media, Mirror Universe characters, Star Trek: Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks. The 2009 movies and any associated media should be nominated under "Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)‎". AOS characters can be inferred to also exist in the Classic universe or vice versa even if they don't appear in canon, nominate as Prime [Character] under AOS or AOS [Character] under Classic as needed. Mirror Universe characters should be listed as Mirror [Character]. Classic/AOS crossover ships should be nominated under Crossovers - Fandom

Middle Earth - Peter Jackson Movies

Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider nominations should be split into the following tags. Any books, comics, and other media should be nominated under the appropriate timeline, and the Angelina Jolie movies should be combined under Original Timeline:

X-Men (Movies) will now be divided into X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies), X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) and Deadpool (2016). Wolverine movies go in Original Timeline

Are you nominating Rings of Power or House of the Dragon? As a reminder, Femslashex generally groups fandoms into a shared universe tag when they take place in the same setting as other canon installments, unless they feature different iterations of the same characters or other drastic differences.

I noticed that though my other noms have been approved, Wheel of Time (TV) hasn't, and it only just occurred to me that it is shared universe-y! I would argue that the show and the books ought to be nominated separately: it's a close adaptation, but much like Tolkien v Jackson (eta: or Game of Thrones/ASOIAF!), there are significant differences. Additionally, with only one season of the show so far, there are a huge number of people who haven't appeared on the show (yet) who could be nominated in bookverse. There are characters in the show who don't exist in the books, as well. Happy to expand further.

Thanks for the heads up! We'll mention it in our first round of clarifications before we finalise it in case anyone else wants to weigh in, but if the differences are similar to other fandoms we split then it will probably also be approved separately.

tellitslant said, there are characters who haven't shown up yet. (Whom I would love to nominate for the tv show, but can't! Not yet!)

I'm trying to nominate the same ships for Fire Emblem Three Houses and Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes and I'm getting an error. Should I be treating the two games as a shared universe?

FEW3H is set in the same world the original game FE3H but it's basically an AU storyline. Most of the cast is the same with a few additions. The two games are listed separately on Ao3 and have been treated separately in other exchanges I've nominated them for. Can you please advise? I can provide more details if it would help.

If any of your relationship tags are identical for both, then that is probably what the error is. Each tag needs to be unique so sometimes we have to put a unique note on the end like (Fire Emblem Three Houses) or something similar. It's not automatically an indication that the fandoms should be combined.

Typically I believe we keep Fire Emblem games separate, but I'm not familiar with them at all so I don't know whether any of the other games we've approved in the past have this same AU issue or not. Can you give me some more information about what you mean by AU storyline and how significantly the storylines and thus characters differ between them? Is it comparable to anything we already do or don't combine, like Star Trek for example where the most recent Chris Pine movies are an AU storyline?

Ah thank you! I can add FE3H and FEW3H to disambiguate the tags.

Three Hopes came out this past June as a spin-off of Three Houses, which is the main series title. None of the other FE games have this issue; they're either stand-alones or sequels, or in the case of the first Fire Emblem Warriors, simply incorporate characters from other games. Three Hopes has mostly the same cast as Three Houses but at the start of the game they encounter Shez the avatar/main character of Three Hopes instead of Byleth, the avatar/main character of Three Houses and this radically alters the course of events.

(And sorry I haven't watched any of the stuff from the new Star Treks so I have no idea if it's similar.)

Setsuka Chiebukuro/Hibiki Otonokoji, Kabuya Yoruko/Sora, and Magorobi Emma/Mitsume Kokoro don't exist in Dangan Ronpa canon. They seem to be from a fangame.

Yes, DR fangames are all OC fanfiction (all original cast made just for the fangame, no relation to canon), but in the format of a game rather than text-only fic.

I haven't played any fangames, and know next to nothing about them, so I'm not sure how to best handle them. But I do know they have nothing to do with DR canon.

Hi! I'm not this particular nominator, but I am familiar with this fangame series and have nominated some pairings for it under the fandom "Dangan Ronpa Another (Fan Games)". While AO3 synns all fangames to the AMT, I do believe they should be kept separate. I can't speak for the other nominator, however.

Thanks for jumping in. I agree, it sounds like they should be kept separate from the primary canon if they're approved. Would it be appropriate to use a single broad fandom tag for all Dangan Ronpa fangames?

We don't typically have nominations for fanworks/specific original characters (outside Original Works), so if there's anything about how fandom handles the fangames that disguishes it from eg. nominating a specific fanfic with named original characters, we'd love to hear more about that.

I can't offer much for any fangames aside from the Another series, as that's the only one I'm familiar with. I would think that each game/series, there would be a separate continuity that would need a separate fandom tag.

For this series in particular: it's designed to slot neatly into the canon timeline, even featuring some cameos of canon characters, so fans of the series treat it as a self-contained extension of canon. The games are structured almost identically to the canon games and therefore engenders basically the same fannish enthusiasm and creativity. Now, I don't know how that compares to fandoms that stem from more traditional fanworks as I've never been in one. Maybe this can be helpful anyway?

I'd argue that Rings of Power and House of the Dragon should be counted as separate fandoms.

Rings of Power makes a number of changes, the largest of which is a very substantial change of the timeline that makes it incompatible with book canon. If you do lump it with a preexisting fandom, it would fit better with the Silmarillion.

House of the Dragon takes place in the same universe as Game of Thrones/ASoIaF, but it takes place over a century and a half before the events of GoT/Asoiaf and they don't have any characters in common.

To add to this, as a writer, I feel that including Rings of Power under either LotR or the Silmarillion would be a mistake. I like all three, but Rings of Power is a substantially different story from the books, with characters that do not exist in the books. The characters who do exist in both are often changed.

For an example, Silmarillion Galadriel has multiple brothers, leaves Beleriand before the war with Morgoth/Sauron actually fully erupts, and is married to Celeborn with a child while living in Eregion with Celebrimbor before Sauron appears in the form of Annatar. Rings of Power Galadriel so far has one brother, took up the fight against Sauron personally after her brother’s death, and so far has no husband, no child, and doesn’t seem to have ever lived in Eregion with Celebrimbor.

They’re fundamentally incompatible with each other, and there are many people in each fandom who haven’t consumed the other. I don’t see how someone who has only watched RoP could write a fic for a book fan, or how someone who has only read the books could write a fic for someone who wants the show.

Thanks for weighing in. Rings of Power sounds distinct but House of the Dragon can still be a shared universe even if events are happening at a different point in time. If there's any other differences we should take into account such as plot or setting contradictions when compared to the Game of Thrones universe please let us know, otherwise we are considering combining at this stage.

The Batman (2022) and DCEU

Hi, just poking my head up about The Batman movie, and how it doesn't fit with the rest of DCEU in both character design and continuity.

Characters such as Selina Kyle have different backgrounds and motivations, and Bruce Wayne only superficially resembles previous iterations. There's also ambiguity if any other superheroes or any non-human powers/aliens/meta humans or villains exist in The Batman. It's effectively Batman played straight, not with comic book logic, and therefore doesn't fit with the Batman stories of the DCEU

I'd like to add my voice to those already saying that Rings of Power should be nominated separately from the rest of the Tolkien fandoms. The storyline is very different, many of the characters are original to the show, and the ones that have overlap with other Tolkien canons are quite dissimilar to their canon counterparts.

For instance, I would like to nominate the following ships, this is how they differ from what I'd nominate in established Tolkien canons:

Galadriel/Miriel: Though these characters both appear in The Silmarillion, they never meet or have any kind of contact (not even theoretically), whereas in RoP they do.

Nori Brandyfoot/Poppy Proudfellow: New characters to RoP, don't exist elsewhere.

Galadriel/Disa: Disa is a new character to RoP, Galadriel is established but quite different in personality and timeline to her canon counterpart.

Bronwyn/Earien: New characters to RoP, don't exist elsewhere.

I agree with the above commenter that it would be impossible for someone who has only read the books or watched the movies to write a fic for someone requesting the show, or vice versa.

Question on eligibility and a heads-up on an "edge case"

Hi, I'm hoping to nominate some ships between characters from a video game (Blaseball) that do not have canonical genders (i.e., no character has a canonical gender or pronouns), but who are widely headcanoned as women through fandom. I feel like this fits the spirit of the exchange, but wanted to check in before I nominate.

Additionally, I'm hoping to nominate a couple ships featuring Jack Pattillo under the fandom Fake AH Crew & Related Fakesverse Groups. Fake AH Crew as a tag redirects to Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter RPF, despite being a fictionalized version of the personas played by the real people. While meatspace Jack identifies as a cisgender man, his GTA character is a woman, resulting in the popular depiction of GTA/Fakes-verse Jack as a woman (often a trans woman). Just wanted to give you a heads up before I nominate. I'm happy to elaborate more if necessary. Thanks!
