Femslash Exchange 2013: FAQ, Rules and Dates
This is our first annual femslash exchange, continuing in the tradition of [community profile] femslash12.

Fest FAQs:
  1. This fest is to celebrate femslash in ALL fandoms. Canon or non-canon pairings are welcome. RPF is welcome, as long as both parties are sixteen or older at time of nomination.

  2. For the purpose of this fest, femslash is defined as fic containing a relationship between two or more characters who identify as female in canon. That means you may not request genderswap or "always a girl" fics for canon male-identified characters. To be clear:

    • You may request fic about cis female-identified characters.

    • You may request fic about transgender women, such as Ms Hudson from Elementary.

    • You may also request fic about canonically genderqueer and gender-questioning characters regardless of their assigned gender, such as Franky from Skins UK, Alister/Athena from Huge, and Xavin from Runaways.

    • You may request a canonically always female alternate universe version of a character who is male in the main universe, such as Natasha Stark from Marvel 3490

    • You may not request fic about characters who are male-identified in canon.

    • You may not request fic about male-identified characters who are temporarily transformed or body swapped into an assigned-female body, such as Guy Gardner in Guy Gardner: Warriorette (if you don't know, don't ask).

  3. Fic must include a romantic and/or sexual relationship of some kind. This is not a friendship ficathon. That means there should be some kind of f/f romance, longing, kissing, love, and/or sex. You're welcome to request and write fic about asexual characters as long as it's in the spirit of this rule.

  4. You must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account to participate. If you do not have one, please send an email to us at femslashexmod@gmail.com with the email address you would like us to send the invite.

  5. Before signups, we will have a nomination period for people to pick fandoms and relationships that they would like included in the fest. Each person can nominate up to five fandoms, with up to five pairings within each. Please only nominate fandoms that you plan to offer to write or request to have written for you.

  6. In your signup, do not imply rank for pairings or otherwise specify a favourite pairing. There is no need to make the person you are assigned feel bad if you want something they are not comfortable writing. You can edit/delete your signup until signups close. There will be an option where you can select to request/offer ANY of the nominated pairings. Please don't select the option if you are not truly open to all of them.

  7. Requester - Signups must include 3-5 fandoms from our list of nominated fandoms, and may include up to six pairings in each of those fandoms. For ease of matching, three of those fandoms MUST request at least two pairings. You may ask for single pairings in your remaining two fandoms, though obviously the more pairings you ask for, the easier matching will be. You will be matched on fandom and pairing alone. While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include squicks. Other things to consider are the inclusion of general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, or anything else you’d like the writer to know. However, please remember that these are optional for the person assigned to you. If you have a lot to say, consider linking to a letter in your own journal with the extra details (like with Yuletide).

  8. Offerer - You may offer between 3-10 with up to 10 pairings per fandom. For ease of matching, three of those fandoms MUST offer at least two pairings. You may offer single pairings in your remaining seven fandoms, though obviously the more pairings you offer, the easier matching will be. You can also choose to offer to write "any" pairing in a given fandom. Only sign up for fandoms you are comfortable writing. You are not obligated to write ALL pairings. Pick whatever you are comfortable with. You don’t have to write the fandom/pairing you were matched on if something else listed the person requested interests you. The only requirement is that the pairing is one requested and that none of the squicks be included. While it is not required, if possible use one of the requested prompts if provided. While the author will not be bound by the scenarios, creating something that blatantly disregards the recipient's likes/dislikes will not be accepted.

  9. Nominated pairings cannot include threesomes or moresomes, though you are welcome to list threesomes/moresomes you'd like in your optional details.

  10. Crossover pairings are not allowed as part of your main signup; however, you can include such preferences in the optional description section of your signup. We will not match you on this, and it’s up to the discretion of the person assigned to you whether they decide that they’re up to such a challenge. There are no guarantees you will get a crossover if you request one.

  11. If you have a problem with, any questions about, or cannot complete your assignment, please contact us immediately at femslashexmod@gmail.com.

  12. This is an exchange fest, which means you must produce a fic for someone else. If you withdraw, it is harder for everyone involved. So please, think carefully if you have the time before signing up. If you withdraw and the person assigned to create something for you withdraws, you will not be assigned a pinch hitter. If you discover after signing up that you can't finish the fic in time, contact the moderators as soon as possible.

  13. In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. You can find the pinch hits here.

  14. Due to the nature of this fest, it is hard for extensions to be given. If you know you won't be able to submit by the due date, please default as soon as possible. If you default prior to the no penalty default date, you may participate next year with no problems. If you default after the date, do not submit your fic, or submit an unfinished fic, you will not be able to participate in the next fest.

  15. NO WANK! Be respectful. Please realize that everyone has different likes/interests/dislikes.

Fest Rules:
  1. All fics have to be a minimum of 1,000 words. There is no maximum word count.

  2. Submissions may be any rating.

  3. Submissions must be femslash.

  4. Betas are not required but strongly encouraged. Submissions with excessive spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors will be rejected. If your submission is rejected for this reason you can resubmit it after you've corrected your mistakes. We will have a beta sign up post for those that will need one.

  5. Please don't talk about the specifics of your assignment in public. We'd like it to be a surprise for everyone.

  6. Stories can't be part of a previously posted series.

Dates
3 - 13 September: Nomination Period
15 - 25 September: Signups open
27 September: Assignments will be sent out by this date
5 November: No penalty default date
9 November: Fics are due
12 November: Archive goes live (or as soon as everyone has a story)

OMFG YAYYYYYYY!

Each person can nominate five fandoms and five pairings.
Just to clarify, does this mean a max of five pairings per fandom nominated?

Up to five pairings in each fandom, so max 25.

Oooh, I am super excited that this fest is happening!

I am wondering if you would be willing to reconsider one of your criteria for what qualifies as femslash, specifically this one: You may also request fic about genderqueer and gender-questioning characters with female anatomy, such as Franky from Skins UK.

I'd like us to be able to request fic about genderqueer and gender-questioning characters regardless of their current body configuration or assigned gender.

Two reasons for this. The self-serving reason is that I'd really like to request fic about what I consider my favorite femslash pairing from the show Huge: Becca, who is a cis teen girl, and Alistair-Athena, who is assigned-male but gender-questioning, and who, in my headcanon at least, will probably transition sometime in the next five years (the characters in the show are teenagers). The other reason is that, philosophically, I feel really uncomfortable with the idea of drawing a line around which genderqueer characters "count" as women (or women-enough-for-femslash) based on their assigned genders.

Does that make sense? I'm glad to discuss any of this further if that would be helpful.

I kept the rule verbatim from femslash12, because, when I took over, the mods asked me to maintain the inclusion of trans and genderqueer characters. However, I think they were arguing for more inclusion over less.

The trouble with headcanon, with no offence intended to your own, is that it can get very odd, very quickly. Claiming that Alistair-Athena as gender queer is one thing, but claiming that, say, MCU Loki is genderqueer is another (though of course people are free to interpret Loki as such, you can see where that would get out of hand if allowed here). I suspect why the assigned female rule came from in the first place.

However, your point about excluding genderqueer characters based on binary assigned gender is well taken. Let me talk about it with the other mod, and get back to you.

Would a pairing involving a canonical female character and an OFC count as a nominated pairing? (Example: I'd like to nominate the film Pacific Rim, which only has two female characters with speaking roles. The pairings I'd like to nominate are, accordingly, Mako/Sasha, Mako/OFC, and Sasha/OFC.)

Are all the Star Treks considered one fandom for these purposes? That is, would Jadzia Dax/Kathryn Janeway be a crossover, or not?

Muccamukk: SW: We're Watching You![personal profile] muccamukk on September 2nd, 2013 02:01 am (UTC)
Original Universe Star Treks will be separate, largely because there doesn't seem to be a meta tag that lumps them together but differentiates them from AOS.

So that would be a crossover, though you could do Janeway/anyone from TNG, as she appeared in both franchises.

I'm not a mod or anything, but I'd think Janeway/Dax wouldn't be a crossover. We know Voyager stopped off as DS9 for several days so while KJ wasn't technically seen on screen, its canonically supported that she was there the same time as Dax. So I'd think that would go under the DS9 fandom myself.....but that's just me (being nosey lol)

...okay, so less than a month before you decided to do this, I was commenting to my beta on your rarepairfest stories that since I'd increased my m/m fic output by two with that ficathon, the next one I did had to be femslash. Clearly the Universe was listening. ;-)

Just one question: what if the number one Doctor Who femslash pairing I love is a Big Finish-only character and a TV-only character--Charley/Martha--I take it that would be ineligible (for nomination, anyway)? :-/

Never mind. The thread above answered my question. *g* I'll just have to put it in my optional details. ;-)

Hey, I did ask for femslash. I'm blaming that one on your muse :D

Hmmm... I wonder if I should just roll BF into the tv fandoms. They usually seem to be off doing their own thing, so I hadn't really considered it.

Negative. At the end of nominations, each fandom will have as many pairings as people have nominated. So if I nominate Sinbad and only nominate three pairings, and no one else nominates Sinbad, then that's how many there will be. If I nominate Marvel 616 and nominate five pairings, and two other people also nominate five different pairings, then there would be fifteen at the end of nominations.

Is 'Canonical character/original character' an acceptable pairing? ie, if I put, "Renee Montoya/Original Character"? That was an option I liked having in the old femslash format but idk if it would work with AO3's architecture.

Has anyone made any banners or anything like that to use to promote the exchange? I have a few Tumblr followers that I think would love to participate, and I can definitely pimp without a graphic, but figured I'd ask before doing so!

At this time it's a fic exchange, I'm afraid. AO3 isn't deeply art friendly, and there's not really a sorting mechanism in that line. (Or if there is, the learning curve for setting up on the archive for the first time is steep enough for me as it is).

We will be doing treats, with all the prompts becoming visible a week before reveals. You're certainly welcome to draw a treat for that.

(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
Muccamukk: DC: Rainbow Batwoman[personal profile] muccamukk on September 4th, 2013 05:49 am (UTC)
Two fandoms (there doesn't seem to be a combined tag for them), though that would include characters that appeared on each in each potential tag set. Please check to make sure that you're not duplicating pairings across the two (like Buffy/Faith is already listed under Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Question for requests: if characters are married in canon, is it okay to indicate in optional details that you're okay with a polyamorous scenario, provided the focus of the story is on the f/f relationship(s) and not on the background canon m/f relationships? I'm also down with divergence AUs where the canon relationships never happen, but this is definitely relevant to what I might suggest for one of my fandoms.

As long as the focus is on the f/f (or f?/f?), background het is okay. Probably a good idea to make it optional however, as your author might not want to include het, background or ortherwise.

Okay, so I've read over these rules, and I have a question.

In the Dear Author letters, can we express a preference for any side ships that may or may not be femslash? (I.e. I have a character that if she's not a part of the femslash ship and her love life is mentioned, I'd either want her to be single or with a specific male character - not someone she's commonly paired with, either.) Is this okay, or should it be left out? Obviously I know that the femslash ship is the focus of the story, but considering my fandoms, the odds of another ship being mentioned would be somewhat high.

Thanks for reading all that, ha. :)

That's fine. As long as you leave the option for her to be single, politely stating a preference for background het pairings is okay.
